Greel syndicate. Are they supposed to be quite difficult
Hello. I'm currently in the second zone (soon to go to the third). I've just got mission in the 2nd zone to protect some outpost from the greel syndicate.... and thinking it would be your standard enemy I went into it as normal. Somehow they completely demolished me and I couldn't even put a slight dent into there hull. Until now most enemies wernt a real problem for me and if I went down I would have taken one down with me. But the greel.... it was liking shooting at a brick wall.
Are they supposed to be that tough. I have a scarab with a combination of lvl 2 and 3 particle lasers, one lvl 3 mining laser and a lvl 3 pulse cannon. I have lvl 3 defenses.
This was still only in the zone 2. Unsure if this was just a one off.

I feel the Greel are about the toughest enemy you face in normal space. (not end game)

They usually have shield busting weapons and that is why you die. And their shields are stronger, so you have to deal a lot of damage in a short period to get through their shields.

Missiles might help you out better. I don't like the particle laser myself. Just look at what damage your weapons do to shields and hulls and fine tune your loadout for the Greel.

Greel start as mk4 foes, and can go all the way to mk6.
So yes, doing a Greel mission with a MK3 ship is going to be a challenge - not impossible, but a challenge.

Appreciated. the weird thing was the mission was described to me as average....
But yeah good to know the greel are just tough and my ship and tactics aren't just rubbish. I'll lvl up and avoid them for now.

Greel are particularly nasty about using a lot of leech missiles. If you can stay mobile, the 50% lost shield regen doesn't hurt as much as when you're stuck and getting shot at on all sides. Null grav boosters are ideal for getting around the battlefield while leeched. Without them, you'll never outrun/catch up to pursuit frigates. They'll just spam leech missiles at you endlessly.

A lot of it will ultimately come down to loadout. The game can only use simple algorithms to try to determine mission and system difficulty relative to the player, the rest is on the player to build a good ship. If you let me know what you're using, I can offer some pointers.

I have already. But no worries the other guys have answered my questions already. Thanks and appreciated the info about the greel. I've now defeated a few frigate class of there ships which were tricky with mostly lvl 3 gear.... but it was just a frigate and out on its own.

I meant more detail than what you already provided. Scarab should be able to handle most anything in the game, provided one doesn't make serious mistakes like using missiles or an all ion cannon loadout. Mining lasers and particle lasers (disco ball) will usually handle anything just fine. Only problem with the Scarab is the high cost of upgrading all those turrets, but they sure do work...

The Minotaur is a better option. It gives the auto-fire ability of the dreadnought class while not being a dreadnought.

Minotaur is well past the price point of someone with MK2-3 equipment in the second system, but it's definitely much better than the Scarab in the long run.

i just upgraded to an Arcturus. Mixture of lvl 4 stuff now (i had some lucky loot to afford it all after beating a dreadnaught in hera).
I have lvl 4 defence with a lvl 5 deflector I found.
I use mostly particles cannons (all lvl 3 now), one forward miners lasers (lvl 4), one pulse canon (lvl 4). 1 Korean laser canon (lvl 3). broadside beam cannon (lvl 4).
Had a few more skirmishes with greel and there going down easier.
I do miss the scarab for manoeuvrability but i'm enjoying the arcturus's tanking. yeah the minotaur is way out of my budget. though i'm tempted to go for deep horizon as my next choice.

Nothing is out of your price range once you find the Face of Gozu field in the start system.

Stick with the Arcturus. With the Manuverability Booster, it's agile enough (Since it's a flat turning increase, the Arcturus' low innate turning stat doesn't matter). Deep Horizon tends not to perform as well. If you want an upgrade that punches *well* above its weight, go for the Manticore (it's basically Scarab 2.0, only better).

Ah was going more for a tanking ship rather then something that put out lots of punches. Manticore seems somewhat like a downgrade from the Arcturus though now so is deep horizon... kinda. I feel its armor is less then the arcturus.
I've almost got enough money for a dread so may just consider a polaris because of its speed and manueverability boost. I usually don't have enough slots left for a Manuverability Booster.

Most of the big ships have horrible turret locations making attacking the enemy difficult at best.

The Barracuda and Minotaur are my favorite smaller ships. Until I can afford the Blackgate.

But you can get infinite money once you find the Face of Gozu field.

who is gozu field?

Is is not a who, it is a what.

Search this forum for 'gozu' and be enlightened. Or use google search (or your favorite search engine) for 'face of gozu' for Rebel Galaxy.

EDIT: This is what I have on it.

Found both the "Face of Gozu" asteroid field and the antimatter speck field in the first sector on my first play through using these techniques.

The faces of Gozu were very large asteroids in a field of otherwise unminable ones in a blue-green nebula but not containing ice asteroids or a bunch of other smaller asteroids. The very big asteroids were metallic looking, almost like large metal crystals, also extremely hard to mine and didn't have fault lines that the detector could detect. I had to get in really close (< 3sm) to mine them with mk2 mining lasers but they did the job eventually. You don't have to zoom in (RMB for mouse/keyboard) on the asteroids for "precision" when mining with the lasers. The nebula/field was in the 3 o'clock position in the second-most outer ring. You could see as you started to zoom in on the asteroid field that they were very large and tightly grouped.
* There's a Greel Whiskey ad roughly centred in the nebula, but not necessarily the field.

The same was true zooming in on the antimatter speck asteroid field as well (outer-most ring at 4 o'clock) but there were only two there, much bigger and they looked like humongous menhirs like the ones that Obelisk carries around. The antimatter speck asteroids were also in a darker blue nebula as noted by others. Also there were Korians hanging around ready to fight.

I'm now rolling in cash (I'm a newbie remember) from trading in 12 faces and 2 antimatter specs. And.... loving it. Now to decide which ship to upgrade to in the next sector. Though I didn't get anywhere near the prices that were talked about in the thread. 68k for each face and 78k for each antimatter.

***Leaving the system, then going back will allow you to mine the faces and specks again, just remember where you found them as they are in the same location.
