How to mod this game and edit the.PAK files

Like the title, i tried many programs like 7-zip, winrar, winzip and even some shady things from the internet in order to open the main files but nothing seems to give access to them.

I know that the game can be modded since we have some out there but i want to make my entry in the modding community and this game is to be my "gateway drug".

Any modders out there would like to share how they managed it?

There are several pages of conversation that I did not go over. It might help you along your way. If you figure it out, I am sure the community would love to know as well, so more mods could be made.

I am absolutely late to to this discussion but thank you for the help. No i did not find any alternatives in the meantime so i will be checking on this the moment i have some free time.
Sorry for the delay i got so many comments on other discussions that your reply totally passed under my nose...
