1. You could use a faster engine than the pirate has, and that is determined by the tech level of the system.
2. Pirate lords come with a lot of cronies. Trying to catch up from behind, just slows you down because the cronies will be close to you, slowing your warp engines and the lord will simply fly away.
3. You need to angle your arrival in front of the pirate lords path of travel. He will then be slowed by you, and you can attack.
1 fly towards the icon on the solar system map.
2 you will probably end up behind the evil lord and be pushed out of warp,
3 steer aside, re-emter warp and try overtaking him and his minions.
4 once youre ahead of the gang steer into their flight path to stop them.
5 kill and loot all the ships.
6 profit.
You won't be popular with the non-pirate factions, but:
- Blow up trade convoys before they reach their desitination - prevents market gluts
- Blow up treasure ships for similar reasons
- Blow up any hostile ships surrounding an outpost that's seeing a Crime Wave or a Millitary Blockade.
- Blow up Korian Invaders while they are en route to an outpost. Note: If you want to get more Viridian Lasers, it's better to let them arrive and start the actual Siege event. Then move in and blow stuff up. More and bigger Korian ships = better chance at containers with green beams of doom.
Do NOT blow up treaty ships or relief vessels. Those will end war/famine events when they arrive safely, exploding them makes the event last longer.
Best way to get hold of a pirate lord, that I found, is to approach him from the opposite direction. When a pirate lord is active, on the news board at any station you will find mention of him. Two places are mentioned at the end of the report; the first is where he left from, the second is where he's going. So quickly travel to his destination, and from there track back to where he came from. Follow the path back, and he cannot avoid you. Even with a ship as slow and cumbersome as the Blackgate, I *always* get my man this way.
Just like Draconus said...
