Not much help I know just my 02 cents worth.
Thanks, so it is 11 after all. How did you compare to find flux? Just grab a flux herb and mix it with another herb without it?
Whilst looking for flux, I also try to eliminate NON flux herbs by breaking out the 3 attributes that are *not* flux. ie: Do a sequential match with other herbs until you get all 3 attributes.
Then you can take that herb out - permanently. As the potential herb count decreases, the process of finding matches also gets faster. It also means every combination will eventually get covered - including Naptha. Hope I made sense.
Yeah I did that too actually, but for some reason I didn't get all 11 herbs. A recount I'm doing now includes an extra flux herb at least, maybe I just counted wrong or something? (I did use a different herb to cross-reference though)
Even though it is tempting to grab a flux herb and start combining it with others, chances to get a random effect are still there. So the real way is to just get all the combinations like a boss.
To do it most efficiently: gather about a 100 herbs and make the first crafts till You get to 60 herbalism.
I usually line them all by type and start combining like 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, etc; after herb one gets 2 known statuses I switch to next herb (and keep it for later).
In the process try to separate the herbs and combine the ones with 3 unknown effects together, next priority is 2 unknown and 1 unkown as last. You should not get fully known herbs early, but if You do - use them after 'unkown' ones. Once You run out of herbs go get another 100 or 2, it works better with larger amounts since You can concentrate on combinations.
Once You get to 60 You can actually start getting flux, so this is the time to go through all herbs again. If You get the flux herbs - keep one separate and others for crafting.
At this point Your sequence should be like this: if You are 'testing' and unkown herb, first combine it with all herbs than have '3 unkown' statuses, then with 2, then with 1, then with non-flux fully known and only then with known flux. That way You have the least chances to waste flux and most chances to get more info(and more info means wasting less flux in the future oparation).
It strongly depends on on skill gain, but that way I get at least half of the flux herbs on the first day on the new server, usually by the end of the second day have at least 10.
Tl;DR
Discovering herb combinations is a heaven for people who like math or just like organizing stuff, if only it could last longer.... we need more herb types :D
I meant just name. In a way it is type, because each type has a unique set of 3 attributes. It's a very basic thing that probably everyone does and it probably was not worth mentioning, said it only to be thorough.
In the very start everything is unknown anyway, as more stuff becomes known it helps to also group herbs by the amount of known properties, but it really is a matter of taste.

That list was useful for figuring out that the third effect is never anything useful, but not much else in my opinion. Someone should make a proper herbalism guide. If no one will I might.
What Sistmatic does is something I do too. Get the non-flux herb attributes out and throw them away or use them on character 2. Like she says (he?) once you have the 3 attributes they can never be flux so you shrink the list of possibilities.
