Well, you can technically play alone, but the game is designed to be played as a multiplayer game. It's a multiplayer hardcore survival game, PVP oriented. No PVE (just a few wild animals), no quests, no campaign, nothing. So you can, but you may get bored quickly. It's not a single player game. What you can do, however, is to play alone on a populated server. A lot of players do this, especially on servers where only consensual PVP is allowed.

I have been playing single player over a week and pretty much i just got bored, i think the game is more for team workers that help one another. If you have friends thats good! But if you dont have friends it will be boring and take long to build stuff. Ive done half of my property and it took me 2 weeks to build it., just one shack and fences to create a field for my crops to grow in.
