The issue is that Ubisoft saw everyone's disinterest with Connor, so decided to make a carbon-copy of Ezio in hopes that the familiarity of a beloved character could cushion any disinterest from other new features.
What this did, however, is feel very same-y for a lot of people, making Arno kinda... not special. He's likeable, sure, but he's nothing new like Connor or even Edward. Almost every other character was forgettable or unlikeable, which ultimately meant that the story in its entirety was just kind of a let-down, since it's a very character-driven story.
The story was also far too short, for my liking. I'm sure Ubisoft was hoping the side-activities and Co-Op missions would tie people over for a long while, but the Murder Mysteries were kinda ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and not executed well, and the Co-Op missions rarely worked properly for the first couple of months of the game's release, which soured a lot of people to it entirely.
I love the game, don't get me wrong, but I can definitely say the story is the weakest aspect.
i second that, that is why i hate shay cormac so much in rogue, dat filthy traitor omg :p i also loved ezio but my all time favorite assassin got to be Captain Edward James Kenway, cause he is just like me, prepared to leave all behind to find that gr8 prize.
