Not one to turn down a free game I popped it in, and gave it a shot. And honestly, I think the reviews of the game NOW, are a little harsh. My (current) machine is borderline 6 years old, so I didnt expect to have the game look amazing, so I didn't hold it against it when I was experiancing 20 FPS. But I never had loading issues, stuttering, or any of the bugs that everyone seems to be complaining about. You should note that my machine has absolutley no buisniess playing a game of this caliber. I was surprised that uPlay even let me install it.
The game itself is very reminicesnt of the first AC, in the way you approach your targets, and complete missions. It really goes back to the lore of the whole series, something I thought was never touched on with any of the games.
Combat is what I always wanted with an AC game. 1-2 combat felt clunky and unrefined
brotherhood-revelations introduced the kill streak mechanic, which when applied correctly could help one cut through huge swaths of enemies.
3-4 Were too refined. Lets be honest, as Connor or Edward you could demilitarize an entire city by yourself and not break a sweat..
But in Unity, they threw out the kill streak mechanic, in lew of a more realistic fighting style. Counter attacks are still there, but have a much smaller window. Now you can parry, and dodge, as well as power strike. Its like the first AC, if they had refined it to that point.
Story I can't give you a review on since I'm still working on it. But so far it has been decently engaging. Nowwhere near the passion of Ezio's story, but still, a decent tale for what its worth.
Now would I reccomend this game? Absolutley. After 13gb of patches Ubisoft has ironed out most of the bugs. If you come across any now, my thoughts would either be its your computer, or its the uplat drm. I cannot however reccomend it at full price. Not saying the end result it worth 60$, but the amount of glitches and bugs that needed sorting out, makes it hard to pay 60$ for it even if they patched them all.
TL;DR Game is fine now that its patched, but wait till it drops in price to buy it. It aint worth 60
a gtx 760 is below the minium requirements, its a gtx 680 which is almost the same as the gtx 770.
Thank both of you guys for the responses :D. I'm gonna take a mix of your adive. i've got a bit of cash to hand but I wanna be careful with this, I'm gonna wait for the spring sale, I'd hope for a 50-60% off, if it meets that mark, I'll buy.
Story: Decent, but nothing to write home about, Arno goes out being "just another Assassin" in the inmense lore of the series, he doesn't really do anything relevant until the last bit of Dead Kings, he's always kind of just there. It's funny because in AC3 Connor basically forged the United States lol, in Unity Arno is just kind of shadowed by everything, you could say that's a more sutble approach but IMO, I feel it was less interesting, the story depends a lot on french history rather than the story they are building in the game itself, and I just didn't feel it had any memorable moments overall, just a couple of really cool scenes here and there, but for the most part I feel like the story was wasted, it would've been much more interesting to see things unfold from Elisé's side, to me, she is the best of Unity's story.
Co-op: Surprisingly fun, it's really engaging, the best mission design in Unity is present during the co-op mission, these have you chase around huge chunks of Paris doing actual cool stuff, or actually infiltrating important buildings, they're not afraid of being hard or tough, and they're heavy on the action (epic soundtracks, cool mission objectives, overall excellent exploration sense), they're a blast, HOWEVER, it's pretty hard to find people who are willing to play co-op seriously, the tougher missions get really annoying if you don't have a decent group who knows what the hell they're doing. I would say something about bugs, but hey, let's ignore that for now, I will just say that I've experienced alot of bugs in co-op.
I have to disagree on that, there's a tremendous amount of bugs still present in the game that are far beyond the user's control, but that's for another discussion IMO. Suffice to say, Dead Kings broke A LOT of things, sadly. (Also, I honestly feel crowds and NPC's LOD issues will never be fixed)
I'm trying to debate whether I should wait for a Steam sale or just pick it up on one of those third party key sites for Uplay. At this point I'm pretty close to biting the Uplay bullet because my curiosity is annoying me :D
Ubisoft recently banned a lot of keys bought from third party sites, so do so at your own risk.
I would say this is the weakest AC I've played to date, you could even see it as a stand alone story, not much is added to the overall mythos of the series with Unity, it's like a new starting point for the most part...it's not a bad game by any means of course, IMO, the series has just seen far more interesting moments, but Unity is alright on it's own, would Unity be the first Assassin's Creed ever, everyone's minds would be blown.
I've played every AC game to date minus the handheld versions. Those were all on PS3. I feel sort of comfortabhle starting my AC collection on PC with Unity as a starting point like you said which is why I'[m considering it.
Maybe I just might suck it up and buy it on Steam...
Wish I had a titan, I'm stuck with an 860m, not complaining, but man, you've got a death machine.
I wish there was some sort of demo, watching gameplay vids doesn't feel right, you only see if you like a game when you're controlling the character, but I don't know anyone in my area who'd let me play on their rig/console.
The main appeal to me is that you can customize your assassin, that seems like a huge jump. I'd want to form a little gang with matching outfits in different colours, and each of us specialising in different things, I just wish there was more co-op.
Ah well, there's hope for AC Victory!
Yeah the Titan is defintely a beast of a card. You should've seen my face when I maxed out Crysis 3 and Far Cry 4 with 40+ fps. A big change from my GTX 760. I was getting 20 fps in both games on High settings.
The main thing that I wanted to get this game was to start the Assassin's Creed series for me on Steam, and also Ubisoft cancelling the seaon pass. I hope Victory isn't a disaster like Unity was....but if it is I can wait
