Assassin`s Creed III was my first AC game, so it still remains by favourite thought the ages.
Black Flag didn`t impressed me as much as the third part did.
After my first walkthrough of Unity, it immediately was included by me in my top-3 notch list of AC games.
Speaking of "Unity vs Blackflag" as main part of this discussion, I can briefly say the following:
Gameplay — AC series have 3 main gameplay pillars: parkour (traversal/navigation), stealth, combat. I can say the Unity is the best in every part of it, and many people would agree with me, that the game have best parkour (defintely speaking of animations, not navigation input, because in this people prefer Ezio trilogy button input responsivness). Combat in Unity had very great potential with its slow pace to develop in future games, but unfortuntately, its idea was abandoed by the developers.
Visuals — graphics of this game still amazes everyone nowadays after 6-7 years after release comparing to new AAA games.
Story — is rather short, with a tons of cut out content (sadly). Many people think it`s bad, but actually it`s just short, so the characters stories are not fully uncovered. I defintely recommend you to read simultaneously with your walkthrough Oliver Bowden book Unity as it depicts in deatils the life of main protagonist-ess, whilst the game plots really lacks that.
Characters — as come out from story section, due to the very short game plot, characters are not developed enough through the plot progression. As mentioned above, to get acquainted with Elise story background, it`s better to read the book with game progression.
Music — soundtrack is great, although some people prefer Fat Cry 3 composer`s soundtrack to Black Flag.
I'm not really good at game reviews, although I did my best to complete the above.
If you like it then Flack Flag is best, otherwise Unity.
I'm actually only starting now to play Unity so I can't say really if it's any good. I've liked all AC so far.
all I can is if you like AC as much as I do and you like Pirate ships, then you should have lots of fun playing Black Flag for sure.
Unity has much more rich content & environment, best co-op, best parkour, best combat. Seriously.
