Because one of them died.

why did the writers have to do that though, hasn't Arno suffered enough?

For one, even if Arno had not discovered that his father was an assassin, he would never have been allowed to marry Élise because she was a noblewoman, while Arno was an orphan taken in by the house of Serre and would have lived in servitude had his circumstanced not been changed with the death of François. Although it was technically possible for a commoner to marry into a noble family in the 18th century, it was frown upon and difficult, not to mention risky for the noble family in question. It was more common the nobles would lose their titles, land and even their inheritance for marrying beneath their stations. Despite that, it was scandalous. François was also well aware of the identity of Arno's father, which is why he would never approve of their relationship.

Secondly, Élise was a templar, while Arno was born of assassins and was destined to become one himself. The life of assassins was devoid of luxuries, safety or comfort and filled with strive, danger and death before meeting with their own untimely and tragic ends. So, the two of them never stood a chance. I also find it doubtful that Élise would quit the Templar Order to be with Arno and Arno had already dedicated himself to the Creed.

after the events of killing Germain, if Elise didn't die she would have had children with Arno and there is nothing you can say to convince me otherwise.

elise straight up doesnt care about arno, their relationship is very one sided after the intro. she was groomed into the templar order basically from birth and up until the very moment she dies, she prioritises her own goals before him. it just wouldnt have happened

I concur. To think otherwise is wishful thinking in my opinion.

Because its edgy to kill off the/a protagonist and allow the antagonists the last laugh. It's a disturbing trend that needs to go away.
