I don't understand how people get attached to Ezio's story.
In the first two minutes of AC2 you see his parents get killed. IN THE FIRST TWO MINUTES.
And then they base the whole story about Ezio getting revenge over his parents' killers over a period of ten years.
I never cared about his parents, and neither should you. It takes time to feel some sort of attachment to any characters in any video game. This is why the story was weak - you weren't fighting for anything you cared about.
But oh my, at the end, theres a woman floating in the air and starts to talk about the past and the future and everything in between, trying to make you think deep thoughts about something that should've ended with the first game.
All these people go on the internet and rave about how amazing AC2 is and suddenly the rest of the gaming community believes it too. So sad.
I base my opinions solely on my own experiences and AC2 was better than AC1.
Hardly when you considering the ROOTS of the franchise. AC was meant to be a game with promise of an open world enviroment with OPTIONS to find and stalk targets, etc. AC2 completely ditched this and became very linear with more a more cinematic approach and this only progressed as the series pushed forward till Unity.
In terms of gameplay, I can see what you mean, though. They did indeed improve A LOT over AC1, but the fact that the biggest factors that made AC1 were removed (freedom, options, etc) it made it feel disappointing to me. It was a sacrifice that I couldn't really deal with. I no longer felt like an Assassin that prayed on targets, but rather was told by the game and or people who to take down just "cause". The atmosphere of the game was definitely less immersive compared to AC1, too. The bright light-heartedness of it and the errand run missions at the start of the game made it feel like a parody at first, took me a long time to get over that. I felt the game could've taken itself a bit more seriously. However, I'll give it credit for being a great game nonetheless.
It barely lived up to hype.
AC1 was the only game where you felt like an assassin; Altair had to plan his assassinations, he had to do an investigation before killing his targets: some informants were giving him maps with guards' positions, their patrol routes, Altair's possible escape routes. In AC2 Ubisoft scraped that idea. Oh, and those ridiculous side missions - delivering letters, beating up unfaithful husbands, is that what assassins do?
The other thing that I liked in AC1 more is graphics, and not just graphics but also a camera work and filters, AC1 looked very cinematic. Graphics in AC2 were dumbed down.
AC2 wasnt about an Assassin, it was about the journey of a young man into an assassin over the course of 20 or so years. 30 year olds might not fight over girls but you can be sure that 17 year olds do and as a young apprentice delivering letters sounds just about right.
In fact, I would rate them like this
AC2 > AC:Revelation > AC4 > AC: Brotherhood >AC3 > AC1 > Liberation
Something about brother hood that ended up being the lame one between 1 and 2 of Ezios story once everything was said and done and also reusing a lot of AC2's soundtrack to boost itself that made it get pushed behind 4. Though...there is no bad AC game honestly, AC1 just had the weakest gameplay. 3 mission and then the assassination...rince and repeat. Ironically it may have been the first but I think it was the worst. Altair was more bad ass though.
Likewise people don't understand how you say AC1 is better than AC2, you don't have to though, tastes differ from person to person, and you don't have to understand, just RESPECT them.
AC2 expanded on everything that made AC1 so good, there was way more variety and the story was much better also.
BTW it shows how much you played AC2 with that comment, it takes like an hour to reach the point where Ezio's life changes.
You are sad because other people don't like the same thigns you do?? WTF?
it's been years since i bothered with ac2. can't remember how long it takes for his parents to get killed but i know it happens right at the start.
Sorry, only a handful of people on here are really saying WHY they think AC2 was better. Everyone else just says "AC2 was best"/
