Nostradamus Gas Vents "Riddle"?

This is the last room underneath the Cafe Theatre. Is there any pattern or strategy to this accursed "quest" or do you just grind it? There seems to bee no rhyme or reason for the way these vents release gas - you are just jumping and hoping not to get hit. I don't know how many tries I went through. There is a specific spot at the corner where the gas vent to your left is significantly below the one you are hanging on and Arno acts like a f....g ♥♥♥♥♥♥ freezing up on his vent and getting hit with the gas forcing to restart the whole accursed thing. This game has its share of annoying moments with overzealous controls, but this bit (and a couple of co-op missions) takes the cake. I guess they've forgot #1 rule of gamemaking at Ubisoft at that time - when the game becomes frustrating IT STOPS BEING FUN TO PLAY!

Each section does have a pattern to it. Just hang on the smaller rectangular parts that don't spew any gas and watch them before moving. towards the end I think I just tried to go through as fast as I could cause I definitely got knocked off 10 times at least before I passed it.

Is reward even worth it? Is it functional armor or just some crappy skin? Because if it is the latter, I'd rather not waste any time and nerves.
