When i play the 2nd time, the game did not ask to stop after 300 rounds, i could play "endless".

You can also change the 'pace' of the game up to 600, i haven't tinkered with this as i think it reduces production / research time as well.

Yeah, it primarilly reduces certain rates, though I think it makes dust less useful on faster speeds, and more useful on slower speeds (as well as the power of the market and mercenaries, better in slower speeds, or worse in fast).
Based upon the way they set it up.. so nowadays I keep it normal for things to be balanced.
Yea, the thing i dont like about the 300+ turns modes is how units scale. They take longer to build, but still moves / damages the same. Means surprise / early rushes are harder to deal with.
So i just turn of the score victory, and i find that version the most enjoyable
I don't really know why it would stop you from saving at that turn
