I imagine this crititally injured effect may be a recovery thing of such? Lowered stats for a number of turns - but at least they survived? Not sure - I'd have to test myself.
As far as critically injured, not sure. Haven't noticed anything, but haven't looked super close yet either. May just be a graphic warning reminding you that you are super low on HP.
So if user Human Floatsam is right, and hero's can't die. I feel that uhh... is quite lame. There's no real risk sending my hero in to take all the damage or something.
If your hero dies in battle and your side wins the battle, he stays with the army and just takes a while to get to full hp.
If your hero dies in battle and your side loses the battle, he is sent back to the acadamy and is locked in there for 20 turns, after which you can re-assign the hero to either an army or a city.
