How do I get my units to cross water

I have a quest that requires me to send my units across the water. What technology and buildings do I need to build boats to carry my units?

I think its an Era II tech you need to research. Check their tooltips again, maybe Era III, I could be wrong. Can't supply you the exact name, I use the German translation. :-/

Yep, pretty sure it's Era II down the bottom with the other Empire improvements. Pretty sure it's called Shipwrights or Docks or something but it's tooltip will tell you.

I really dislike the whole boat system but for some units and heroes it make's sense. Era two you need to research empire boats. In era three you can research docks and build it in one of your cities close to the water. What this does is unlocks water trade routes with other regions close by such as an ally or yourself.

What it fails to mention is it reduces the movement penalties when you dock/undock your armies. With the docks unlocked/built you can actually dock/undock and not lose your full turn doing so.
