Ignoring money (if that's an issue, then Endless Legend + DLCs on sale + Community patch):
I play Endless Legend to invest myself in the world, even after a thousand hours of playtime, as that is what the Endless Games excel at, while also having an acceptable quality of repetitive Strategic Gameplay.
I play Age of Wonders 4 for the power fantasy that only a HIGH Fantasy setting can provide me. But, after finishing a few long games playing as a full fledged Dragon, I'm likely only going to come back to that game in order to play additional story realms (if they come), or new content I deem significant. As I find the problems I have with Planetfall are still present in Age of Wonders 4, but the HIGH fantasy setting is doing A LOT for me having played it as much as I have already.
Honestly, the best thing Age of Wonders 4 can do, is to go all in on it being High Fantasy Land-based stellaris. But, that's a lot of money that relies on Stellaris levels of popularity retention, and I wager what's going to happen is that Age of Wonders 4 will go the way of PLANETFALL by only having four "expansions" (we already got one in June 2023), and the Devs going on to work on the next Age of Wonders game.
In the end:
I think there is enough room for both games to share in the Fantasy Strategy Genre, but I'm biased towards Endless Legend, just because I like its overall focused world building and narrative more, whereas Age of Wonders 4 is more of a sandbox first and foremost (like Stellaris).
Granted, Age of Wonders 4 is new and shiny, and that's definitely a point for it.
IMO AOW is focus more on combat tactical gameplay.
While endless legends has more "true 4x spirit", with a very very detail, nice written lore for every race and back story.
Is still depend on your taste.
I have all 3 but i have yet to play much with 2-3. This one i have already played out, and in this regard with the advancement (aka experience gain of units) it makes even your starting units be useful in later games.
THe fourth one i have not tried yet, but i am thinking of eventually, allthough i mostly stopped purchasing anything upon release, because simply it is not worth it. (Sometimes i do go with EA though! But those devs have a good reputation) Simply because most of the time game breaking bugs, and other issues are still present in a published game. Or they will overcharge with later added DLC-s so it is better to buy the complete edition. So most of the time i just wait now with my purchases.
