Overheating of my GPU
Holy ♥♥♥♥ is it normal that my Sapphire R9 290X 4GB gets hot as ♥♥♥♥ when playing this game?
I'm talking like 90 degrees celsius here, got scared for a minute

some games like endless legend or age of wonders 3 use the full power of the graphics card as far as i understand or at least driving them up that high. now if your gpu heating isn't good / sufficient then it might overheat.

yes it is produced by the game but the real problem lies in your gpu fan.

No, 90c is fine for a GPU. That's spec, it's just running at full performance.

Turn vsync on, a 6870HD can handle this game at 60 fps with no problem, so maybe your card is wasting power.
The Renderer Oct 15, 2016 @ 12:43pm
You need to limit your frame rate. Turn on vsync as mentioned above or use a frame limiter.
AlienGeek Oct 15, 2016 @ 12:48pm
No in fact turn vsync off, and set the frame rate to 30.
This way my GPU goes below 80c.
Viper Oct 15, 2016 @ 1:03pm
No that is not normal. My GPU ( GTX 970 ) never reaches 60C. Make sure the fan is still functional and that it is not clogged with dust. And also make sure that the FPS is not set to unlimited. You are heating your GPU by displaying uneeded and unused frames. especially is you have a 60Hz monitor. 60 FPS is plenty regardless for this type of game.

And 90c is not fine for a GPU...to the person who said that. Heat is what determines the lifetime of electronics. While 90C will not cause it to fail immidiatelly. It will cause it to fail a lot sooner that if it was running at 60C.

Thx for all of your replies...
I find it quite strange because I play The Witcher on Ultra and it doesn't get that hot at all.
There's other games that are far more demanding that I've played and it never reaches those temperatures and no my fan isn't broken

GPUs and CPUs are designed to run at 100% power for their entire lifetime. By the time they wear out they will be long obsolete.

Unless there is something wrong with your cooling system you never have to worry about them working "too hard" for any length of time. That's what they are supposed to do.

If you GPU is running cool or underpower, then it's being wasted, and you might as well have bought a cheap discount card.

Other games are probably bottlenecking on your CPU. Graphics are generally handled by both the CPU and GPU, not always evenly, and one can't pick up the slack for the other. When there is pretty much nothing for the CPU to do in a situation, the GPU will go all out, you can see this often in like a menu screen for a game where FPS might shoot up into the thousands and people hear their GPU's coil whine for the first time and start freaking out. Endless Legend is very light on CPU graphics.

That is not true. The GPU runs at the same efficiency regarless of the temperature. The cooler you keep it the better. Why do you think people invest in liquid cooling for their CPUs. The GPU is designed not to get so hot as to cause failure. But it is in the manufacturers best interest for the GPU not to last 4-5 years as they would like you to upgrade every single generation of new GPUs. The planned lifetime is 1-2 years. I have looked at charts showing the lifetime of semiconductors vs heat. The more you raise the heat the less time they last. And if you raise the heat very high over 90+C . That is beyond designed operating range.. and over 100C ( hotter than boiling water ) . Immidiate failure is possible. The guy is not talking about 80C. He is taking about greater than 90C. That is not normal for a GPU to operate that hot even at 100% duty cycle.

Most people don't buy their card only for one specific game and Endless Legend surely is not the kind of game that should max out your card, else you won't have much fun with a lot of today's games.

90C is not hot. GPUs are designed to run up to 120C+ without failing, 110C is within normal safe temp ranges. When a GPU gets too hot it triggers a safety mechanism which shuts it off, if your GPU is not shutting off constantly from overheating then it's completely fine.

Liquid cooling exists only for people who want to massively overclock their CPUs. Anyone who buys a liquid cooling system and uses it to run a standard box speed CPU at 50C is doing it wrong.

Running them cool adds a nominal amount of lifetime, lifetime that is not needed. I know people who take their old cards and stick them in a machine that runs at 100% 24/7, bitcoin farming IIRC, the cards last for like a decade without failing.

Turning your PC off and on between uses shortens part lifetime more than using them in a way they were designed to be used.

Make sure you use a dust can to clean your GFX fan and the inside of your tower. Dust can cause huge problems heat wise. Other than that make sure you try to tweak your settings in the controll panel like others said you can use your GPU to handle some of the load.

98C.is the maximum safe temperature for a GTX 970 ..so no. You do realize that 100C is the temperature of boiling water don't you. That is indeed very hot. 120C....lol.

Yeah man but I just explained that my fan works fine, it only gets that hot for THIS particular game...
