Coop multiplayer?
My friend and I are thinking of getting this, we want to be able to play through a campaign on the same team though, not just battle each other. Can someone let me know what modes of play are available in multiplayer?

Quoting the latest patch:
"Shared victory
Ever had a multiplayer game where the last dozen turns are rife with suspicion and mistrust, as you and your allies all separately angle for the victory, knowing full well that only one of you would win, hoping there was a way you could share credit for your hard-won victory? Hope no more! We added an option at game creation that enables shared victories: basically, if you win, you win for whatever victory you earned, and your allies get the shared victory.
Make sure you tick the option at game creation, because it can't be changed later on. Take comfort in the knowledge that if the option is activated, you are safe(r) from last-minute betrayal!"
I appreciate the quick reply, but not owning the game, that doesn't really explain much to me. Basically what I want to know is can my friend and I team up against computer opponents?

Yes you can create diplomatic ally. And when u are in ally u can trade unit resource gold and city with addon.

In a game u cant set it before game but ally is possible to do in turn 10-20.
Are you saying the only multiplayer is random battles? Allying with another player is the only method of coop?

What does that even mean? No one said anything like that.

Well nobody can give me a straight answer as to whether there is campaign coop, so i'm having to try to deduce the answer from these replies. What i'm gathering is there is standard strategy multiplayer matchmaking, and in the matches you can ally with other players, and that's the extent of playing with your friends.

There are no pre-made teams. If you have an alliance with another faction (your friend you want to play with), if one of you achieves any of the available victories, the members of that alliance win the game. So, you can just make an alliance with your friend, and work together from there. Works pretty much the same as teams would, except the teams form up during the game.

I guess by random battles you meant FFA?

There is no campaign. It's a 4x, you build your little cities and grow your civilization. If you want, you can ally with a friend playing another civ and work together, although some work better this way than others.

To the OP, ill add that for example, you start a game with 8 empires. 1 of which is you, one of which is a friend, 6 of which are ai. All games start with each player on a seperate "team". Shortly into the game you can (through early diplomacy technology research) form an alliance with your friend, ( or any ai for that matter) and continue to play and win with your chosen team moving forward.

On a related note to anyone else reading, I wonder if the ai will team up amongst themselves now that alliances are an option.

4x games rarely have narrative story campaign like RTS. You're on the wrong place.

What kind of co op do you want. Ally is about as much as you can co op duirng a 4X type game. You each have to still play your own faction. What exactly do you want to share between you and your friend.

I've never played a 4x game before, but from the previous posts it sounds pretty cool. How long are typical games? My friend and I play a lot of coop RPGs, so we were looking for something with more strategy.

I just came here looking for similar info. How many players can you align with/win with?
