Expansion disapproval reduction
Well, I conquered a few cities from other empires and the empire disapproval with each city sky rocketted in a second. I realize it's because of the big expansion but doesn't it seem a little over the top that every time I conquer\colonise a new city (after colonising a few before that) the happiness goes down by 10? Unless there's a way to counter it that I don't know about?

You have to build your empire tall as well as wide. Get as many of your district to level 2, it gives +15 approval, eventually, that city in the region will become frevent. And as you do the same to all other cities in other regions, eventually your total empire positive approval will overcome your negative expansion approval.

It is not a fast process, esp when your cities are already high in population, but you will get there eventually.

When I started out with EL, I also like to conquer fast and expand wide, often my cities are just city centre with no district and only settled in regions where there are approval anomalies to take advantage of. However, in my last 2 games, I started to slow down my expansion, and build up city districts, I am able to colonised many many regions.

Hope this help.

But every time I expand with one district the happiness goes down by 10, so if I'm expanding 4 districts and after that I get 15 more happiness, I'm still losing 25 points. Or does it work in a different way?
If you keep building boroughs, (like 6 of them in a triangle formation) it starts off bad for happiness but ends with -50 (per additional district) +45 (for 3 level 2's), from there you keep expanding till it gets more positive as you see fit. As long as you don't play in Endless.. you should be fine.

Start with one city and don't expand out till you are comfortable with it, starting a whole new city doesn't mean that you're alot better off.

Above is the link to efficient city building. Hope it will be helpful. ( I use the triangle style for my city building)

City building:
Yes, you need 4 surrounding district to level a district to level 2. The negative approval in the beginning, I took that as investment, eventually they will turn positive with high population.

Building a triangle city, with City Centre at a tip, cause level 2 city centre gave no additional approval.

By 4 population, I added 2 district, Approval = -20
By 10 population, I added 3 more district. Approval = -20 -30 +45 = -5
By 18 population, I added 4 more district. Approval = -5 -40 +60 = +15

If you add the following you will get more approval.
Sewer +20
Central Market +25
Bread & Circus -25% to disapproval penalty for colonising other regions.

One thing I feel is that when I want to settle down at a spot, the initial 10 tiles for my district expansion is not obstructed by ruins, minor fraction villages or watchtowers. If it is, you initial expansion will ended with negative approval rather than positive ones.

Conquering enemies cities.

You need to wait for city to be under your control (need to see the percentage reach 100%). And I usually salt the city after that, as AI dun seems to care about approval and besides, you gain a settler for salting the city.

Luxury Resources Booster

Use these when you monthly Luxury Resources Income > Cost of activating the booster. It will definitely help. You will also see that the cost actually increases when you have more cities.

Hope this help.
This is not correct, expansion disapproval is when you build new cities, not expand on one you have.

oh and one thing: if you create a district, the happines goes down ,this is the expansio ndisapproval. so, build sewers in the beginning, afterwards use the ressources to expand youre empire.

It actually adds to your 'city happiness' or lowers it.. and it can be positive if you follow the steps of expanding to since each single district has to be adjacent to four, which stacks, giving you multiple tier 2 districts.

I read your thoughts and the guide and it was really helpful. Thanks a lot!

if you build a district and one levels up to level 2.
You gain 5 happiness.
Not -15 +5 = -10
Just a sraight +5 happiness for that expansion.

So make sure your city has as many level 2 districts as possible and the city happiness will become to rise, it takes alittle while but it is do able:)
