Are DLC necessary?
So, I bought Endless Legend like two years ago, played a couple of hours and forgot about tha game after that. I really enjoyed Endless Space 2, so I decided to go back to EL. I don't think I'll stay with the game longer than tens of hours, as I tend to forget about games, so I don't know are DLC worth buying for this couple of sessions. Do they add some functions that are necessary to fully enjoy the game?

Play the game if you like it then get the dlc. Winter sale it may go cheap.

You could join a multiplayer game to find out about DLC content. Only host needs to have the DLCs. Joining plyers do need to have vanilla game only and can enjoy all content offered by hosting player.

No not really. Each of the large ones adds a new feature and faction with its own mechanics, which given how many there are, might actually make the game LESS enjoyable going from 0 to 60 right off the bat. The base game itself is pretty great, and if you end up really liking that, they all go on relatively large sales quite often, so id say wait for the christmas one

It's tough to say if they are necessary since it's still playable but they add ALOT more depth to the game in all areas. With the DLC you get more in-depth winters, oceans, eras, quests and other stuff. Also Spying and Guardians are some of my favourite new additions. If you have all the DLC it feels like one of the most flushed out 4X games IMO

Also I think even if you don't like playing any of the new races still getting to play with them makes the game a lot less stale

Nope, The DLC's add extra content, and this game is very enjoyable without; that said alot of people around here will have a favorite to tell you to go try te play with a host that has it, and I think most of them are worth it so you may want to watch for a sale if budget is a concern.

I haven't played everything, but the closest to "necessary" might be Shifters, which makes a very nice improvement to the Winter season. Since Winter comes more often and lasts longer as the game progresses, it's nice to have it improved.

Personally, the different factions add a lot of, "Hmmm... let me try things from a totally different perspective" which makes it feel like a new game. The one expansion I haven't gotten is Shadows: the whole sabotage mechanic seems ripe for annoyance and frustration.

You are missing on a lot if you do not have Shadows in my opinion. I cannot imagine the game without the mechanics of pillaging, spying, and the Forgotten faction, which I like playing the most.

I think that the DLC adds enough to make the game feel completely well rounded, but certainly adding them to your game library as you play more and become better enamored of the game makes sense. Endless Legend was a perfectly acceptable title when it first launched and, in my case, I have been playing it quite steadily from then and as each DLC was added, with no discernible difference in enjoyment.
