Is the base game fun?
Title. A friend of mine told me about this game (because of the new DLC) and I haven't player a "Civilization-like" 4x type of game in ages but I noticed the full game with all the DLShit is +100$ so, is the base game fun, or is it barebones?

There's enough unique stuff going on with this game that the base game alone will keep you entertained for a good while. Each of the factions play pretty uniquely, and have their own story missions.
Guardians is basically a must have for multiplayer, but dlc used in multiplayer is based on what the host has, so chances are you don't need to get it. It adds three deeds per era that grant a special bonus to whoever completes them first, including a wonder per era. It also adds competitive and cooperative quests, and the titular guardians themselves. The guardians are kind of super units, and they're a neat addition, but kind of overshadowed by the previous stuff, which makes multiplayer far more dynamic and interesting.
Beyond that every major expansion follows a formula of adding a new mechanic and a new faction that specializes in that mechanic. Shadows adds an espionage system and a stealthy faction focused on espionage. Shifters adds new mechanics to winter and a faction that changes in the winter. Tempest adds naval stuff and a fish pirate faction. Inferno adds volcanic regions and a faction trying to terraform the planet into a ashen paradise. Symbiosis add a new set of super units, and a faction closely tied to them. They all add a fair bit of new content, but none I would really consider necessary.

It is fun, very much so. And you definitely don't need all the DLC. Tempest adds sea stuff, Shifters adds winter stuff. I'd say those two add the most content. Maybe Shadows as well, for spy stuff.

But there are a lot of discounts running currently, with -50% and -75%. And then there are also other sites that sell steam keys at discounts.

If I were you, just buy the base game, see if you like it and wait for discount sales to buy DLCs in the future.

The base game is definitely fun. I'd say the DLCs add a lot of stuff especially Shifters, Tempest and Guardians. If you are unsure just get the base game first, it's really good aswell.

The DLCs are on sale quite often so no need to rush to get them.

I’d add that the base game is fun. There are multiple factions that work in very different ways. The only complaint I’d have about the base game is that the Winter season was a little boring. It has important strategic implications, to be sure, but the Shifters DLC added Winter-specific goals and a faction that changes depending on the season, so I think it’s the most useful DLC.

You will enjoy the base, though. Start with the more conventional factions to learn the ropes, then try out the very different factions like the one that can build only one city, or the one that can turn dead menu units into their units.

If anything id avoid the DLC until you get used to the basegame they all add new features and it could get pretty overwhelming trying to get your head around it all. Heck I switch off dlcs sometimes when im not feeling like messing around with them.

Do these DLCs change the base game's campaign? :confusedpolice:

Because if we compare with Age of Wonders 3, I think the DLCs while adding new interesting features do not affect the campaign of the base game at all, the new features are only implemented in the DLC campaigns.

YES! The base game is very fun! I own tempest alongside Gaurdians and am getting shifters. Should i get the Bundle that gives all DLC(minus newest one) or should i get Shifters and Endless Space 2? Not very intrested in Shadows....

Also as others mentioned the Winter in base game is very bland. HOWEVER whilst winters are very bland i must say the Ocean is just as bland(maybe a little more depending on map). In Base Game the Ocean is literally just used to seperate continents. Theres nothing in the Ocean in base game-nothing. No Ruins,No Fortresses it is LITERALLY EMPTY.

True but even without it the bundle would be $6 more for dlc

Thanks for all the replies, I think I will buy the classic edition + Guardians, Shifters and Tempest tomorrow, because I feel like these complement and should be part of the core game.
