FIX the blasted QtWebEngineProcess that randomly overloads my system mem/cpu.
not at all pleased with the "new launcher",

getting rather tired of 2k at this point.. first redshell now QtWebEngineProcess locking up all my resources on my system due to the new launcher. this literally uses all my system memory and close to 75%+ of my cpu, completely and effectively crippling my system without a task manager stop process and ram flush. the qt process also tends to linger deciding to run whenever it feels the need to. i had played civ 6 almost 8 hours earlier and the qt nonsense simply started up while i was playing a completely different game, even after civ 6 was closed down on my system and on steam.

as posted here.

this nonsense needs to stop. and yes donald and sam.. i have sent a report to 2k support.

for anyone else having this issue of complete lockup, (god forbid while you're playing something else), open your task manager and give it the time it needs to process the request, then under processes, close down qtwebengineprocess manually. your system will also require a bit of time to reformat the memory processes currently being used and what ever was being crushed on the page file. also suggested on the link posted is to manually close the qt process down before you close down civ 6.

unreal.

Alternatively, you could try just launching the game exe directly bypassing the launcher. Go to Civ 6 in Steam -> Properties -> Set Launch Options, enter (including the double quotes):
"<Path to Civ 6 executable>" %command%
Replace <Path to Civ 6 executable> with your actual exe location. I also had issues with the launcher (it would hang when left open for more than a couple of seconds, so I had to quickly click the button to launch the game before that happened), but bypassing the launcher works fine for me.

This should also hopefully bypass all the other issues with the launcher people are experiencing.

Are you sure this is even a Civ 6 thing tho?

Bear with me.

Open task manager. Manually end task any background process associated with Origin (I'm sure you'll recognize the orange circle icon).

Run Civ 6 ap. QtWebEngineProcess should not run.

I "think" it's an Origin thing, man.

edit: didn't even ask if you have Origin on your computer, but I guess it goes without saying. if you fire back, "I don't even have Origin!" I'll know I'm off base.

This is also an Origin thing. They both launch a process called QtWebEngineProcess.exe.

Edit: actually, I've just tested this and Civ6's version of QtWebEngineProcess.exe does actually quit itself when the game is launched. So it shouldn't be hanging around afterwards. When it was up, it wasn't taking up many CPU cycles either (but I have 8 cores 16 threads, so it wouldn't have made much impact if it did apart from hanging itself). If it doesn't exit when launching the game, something's wrong.

I have no QtWebEngineProcess at all when Origin and associated aps are closed. It doesn't with the beta launcher, nor with the game.

of course it is, of course i'm "sure".. i traced the process directly to the civ 6 folder. why do i need to close anything else down when all you need to do is open the file location for the qt process in question via task manager. kmon man. if it was origin it would have taken me to the origin root folder.

origin does use the same process, i have never had this issue with origin or any other application that uses or shares qt.

this is specific to the civ 6 launcher.. and you could easily thumb through the linked post and see that it is. consider yourself fortunate. if civ 6 has an issue with closing normally, which sometimes it does, it will hang. then this problem could happen and does, whenever is decides to do so.

i have had this happen twice now, both traced to civ 6 and both times complete resource lock.

it's not an "origin thing". it's a "we did not ask for this shoddy launcher to begin with".. thing

there are several launcher issues, this is just another one.

I will side with you that you were 100% correct 24 hours or longer ago, but it does not seem the case now. I cannot elicit QtWebEngineProcess to launch under any circumstance, as it stands now, with only Steam and Civ 6 as far as game service/application.

I'm not in a position to make accusations, but I can imagine under certain circumstances an application which masks itself into other software, marauding as being associated with said software, but having malicious intent as using your resources to contribute to bitcoin mining, and one or another person's level of expertise at identifying the -root- of said ap would not conclusively garner a truthful explanation. If it's continuing, understand that I do not have this happening.

More likely is an interaction between two processes.
