Civ VI opens in windowed mode, can't get it to go fullscreen
Starting this morning, when I open Civ VI it is in a window that only takes up part of the screen. When I go into the graphics options menu and select 'full screen', nothing changes. It says "Do you wish to accept the new resolution?" but the resolution and windowed situation hasn't changed.

I have been playing Civ VI for months without any issues like this. I have a high DPI display which means that everything is super small in windowed mode. I'd go blind trying to play like that.

UPDATE: So apparently it was on BORDERLESS window mode. I set it for REGULAR windowed mode, and then I was able to set it for fullscreen. Because sure, why not?

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: OK, so this work-around only applies when you run in Direct X 11 mode. I can't get Direct X 12 Civ 6 to go fullscreen anymore. :steamsad:

Yeah.. happenes to me as well...

Does this happen after the splash animations end (AMD, Firaxis etc) as the game swaps those out: I recall reading that this was the culprit maybe. Maybe that'll give you a lead.

so I've faced the same problem, sad to see that even over a year later this isn't fixed... I managed to work around this using the in-game UI scaling option and playing the game in borderless windowed mode. hope this helps anyone else.

If you're using Windows 10 as for 16/8/2019 - try going into Settings > System > Display and scroll down until you find 'Graphics Settings'. Choose the .exe game file in 'Browse', and set to High Performance.

It seems like Windows 10 overrides the settings inside the graphic card settings (AMD Catalyst Control Center by the way, using good old AMD Radeon HD 7600M Series + Intel HD 4000).

These will work if logfile 'Renderer.txt' has error code 0x887A0004 somewhere inside it. Logfile can be found at Documents > Games > Sid Meier's Civilization VI > Logs.

Sorry for necroposting, hope this helps. Yep, tried google solutions, but yeah none relevant till I troubleshoot the problem myself.

i am having this exact same problem SUDDENLY. no reason. it started yesterday evening (I played in the morning and had no issues). I have tried to set the Options >Graphics to "Full Screen" but whenever I do and hit "Confirm" it immediately switches back to "Windowed." I made no operating system updates (I'm on a Mac PowerBook Pro). Can't fathom why this happened. I'm next going to uninstall everything and try again.

Same here, opened a thread about it as well.

I was having the same issue (I play on Mac) but fixed it. If you click play game in Steam, a window pops up. Don’t hit play immediately. There is a button right below the play button that says options, press it and a dropdown menu appears. Click game settings and switch the “Play...” preset to Full screen. Also make sure the Graphics option is set to OpenGL. Hope this helps, it fixed it for me.

@slwsandor: Thank you so much, that's at least a solution. Changing only the fullscreen setting does not work, seems like using Metal is not compatible with fullscreen. The crazy thing is, I had the problem since an update a few days before. Before that fullscreen ran perfectly and I've never changed those options.

@slwsandor thank you, it worked for me as well.

Setting it to OpenGL is not a great solution. The game runs far better under Metal.

It has to run better because Metal is a newer technology. However, it's up to the devs.

go inside the app into graphical option and switch to full screen.
