What is the goal of the game?
I find it frustrating that even as a beginner, the game seems blocked against you. Other players (I am a single player) are much further advanced than you, barbarians pop in constantly and your workers are gone, unlike Civilization V, after three turns so it is difficult to establish you land.

My recommendations for starting out:
-If there's a lot of easily exploitable resources within 1 or 2 tiles of your city, train a builder and use your warrior to explore nearby.
-Otherwise, consider training a scout so you can bring your warrior home.
-Train a warrior or a slinger to defend against barbarians. If you have a river, slingers are especially good because there's a penalty for attacking enemies in melee across a river.

Regarding barbarians, they send out scouts to find your cities and if you pick them off before they return to their camp you'll be able to avoid more onerous barbarian attacks.

I think the main problem is that, in order to make up for any lack of AI, the game 'cheats.' This has been true since the beginning probably, at least since Civ III. The AI players get free units, don't have to pay upkeep, etc... the AI does not have fog of war and can "see" all of your units for means of calculating where to move their pieces.

I believe that the rule in Civ III was that no civilization was allowed to fall 2 techs behind the player. If the player pulled too far ahead of the AI, the game would give free techs to the AI players to even up the game.

Also, at least in Civ IV, the AI would gang up on the player as soon as they were in sight of winning the game. If you started to build the ship to alpha centauri, the AI players would all act in concert and dogpile on the human player in endless attacks.

Civ warfare has been nerfed in favor of the AI at least since Civ. III as well. Then again, it was far, far too easy to win through World Conquest in Civ's I & II. But still, its nerfed so bad that Civ can't really be called a wargame and is absolutely not fun at all to fight wars in. This latest thing about warmongering penalties just for defending yourself is ridiculous.

I really haven't enjoyed a Civ game since Civ II & III. I regretted buying the last two chapters and am really regretting buying VI because it won't even start for me now.
