Why did the Windows update from two weeks ago screw over my CIV games
Since the update I can no longer load Civ VI. It crashes when launching. Before it even gets to the start menu.

Civ VII won't launch at all

Civ V will launch with an error, but I can still play it. The graphics in-game are messed up, but it still plays.

So basically with the launch of a new CIV I have gone back to playing the oldest version I have.

Don't think I had such an update. Still running fine. (I only have VI installed, so no idea if V had one or not, and don't own VII)

Do you maybe have a storage drive going bad?

Last update my Civ VI had was when the last monthly challenge was added.

How old are your GPU drivers?

Yes check this. I've had Windows updates install old drivers a few times in the past
I have qualcomm adreno drivers and keep getting an error message when I try to update them.

Qualcomm, as in you are not playing on an x86 type of CPU? If so, I'm guessing that is your problem. Compatibility with those is not going to be guaranteed for any game unless a game specifically says so.

I have a Samsung laptop from Costco. I have played Civ V and VI for years with no issues. It was not until two weeks ago that I had any problems. I mentioned that in the original message.

But yes, I have a CPU with x86 blah blah blah.

You might want to complain with Microsoft then. I mean if it was a Windows update then it's kind off their fault.

And let's be honest here. The amount of screw ups I've seen with Windows updates in the last couple of years has been mind boggling.

I had a Windows update that caused my laptop screen to stop working entirely. I still could use connected screens (via HDMI) but the laptop display itself remained dark. Next update the problem disappeared. I never changed the configuration.

Recent update killed my login via face recognition. Had to log in with other means to disable and re-enable it with new scans. And this btw. didn't just happen on one computer but on multiple laptops (work as well). So my recommendation would be to check what updates got installed recently and maybe try to do a roll back removing some of that stuff...

Also older laptops sometimes might work better with older versions of Windows. Not saying you should switch to Windows 10 or older. Just saying that it is an option. And there's also always Linux...
