If it doesn't then that is a sign consumers are not buying it because they either don't like what it offers and/or consider it too expensive for the price point.
-Civilization VI at release peaked at twice the player number of Civilization VII
-While Civilization VI managed the incredibly feat of growing its player count from about one year after release onwards, it never reached anywhere close to release ever again
-There is still the chance Civilization VII could improve its numbers in the future, but... in my opinion it doesn't look very promising
Even No Man's Sky which initially had a 200k player peak at release and literally dropped off a cliff afterwards because of how bad and unfinished that game was could not recover its player numbers after several years of patches and re-works fixed the game. The "second" release of that game peaked at about 90k which is good but still less than half of what it got in release.
Could Civ 7 in the long run become a solid selling game with consistent player activity? The answer is a maybe but I honestly doubt it.
It all depends on what Firaxis will do to please the clients, so they come back and more user buy CIV VII
It's still bad and unfinished. I'm enjoying it despite its problems, but oh wow it has a lot of them. I just fell through the Nexus this morning. If they had fixed the fundamentals (mobs and their fire passing through stuff, and multiplayer sync) then they might have done a bit better, though probably still never hit their peak again. They've delivered pretty much everything else they promised, but those two things are still bad and there are lots of other irritations besides.
I just thought of NMS because it popped back up in the news from time to time regarding fixes and having been a redemption story. But even with a redemption story the game still could never really recover from its disastrous launch.
If anyone has a an actual example though of a single player game that became more popular over time I'd happy to check the game and its circumstances out.
it's now 47k 24-hour peak for 6 and
21.6k 24-hour peak for 7
Maybe they can turn it around, but I dunno... seems to be a long and tough road ahead of them for now.
Also, VI has been on super-heavy >85% sales for the past few months. Getting Civ 6 Anthology for 10-20 or so bucks is hell of a deal for newbies to the franchise. And now that they are seeing mixed reception to VII, they might not even “convert” to VII (the new shiny release) players any time soon either with its 70 dollar asking price and DLC already prepped and ready to land.
