Civilization 6 officially more popular than Civ 7!
As of the timing of this post, the current player count is...
Civ 7: 31k
Civ 6: 34k

A new game should absolutely have more players in its first month than an older game.

If it doesn't then that is a sign consumers are not buying it because they either don't like what it offers and/or consider it too expensive for the price point.
-Most games peak on release

-Civilization VI at release peaked at twice the player number of Civilization VII

-While Civilization VI managed the incredibly feat of growing its player count from about one year after release onwards, it never reached anywhere close to release ever again

-There is still the chance Civilization VII could improve its numbers in the future, but... in my opinion it doesn't look very promising

Show me one single player game (most Civ players only ever play the game in single player mode) that has surpassed its release peak months or years after it was released.

Even No Man's Sky which initially had a 200k player peak at release and literally dropped off a cliff afterwards because of how bad and unfinished that game was could not recover its player numbers after several years of patches and re-works fixed the game. The "second" release of that game peaked at about 90k which is good but still less than half of what it got in release.

Could Civ 7 in the long run become a solid selling game with consistent player activity? The answer is a maybe but I honestly doubt it.

Wouldn't buy new version at moment because its bare bones and they will release lots of DLC padding in future. Wait a year and buy as bundle with some DLC when discounted.
Square-Enix had that problem with FF XIV and they made a story out of it and destroyed the whole game and rebuild it. Now it is one of the best mmo´s out there.

It all depends on what Firaxis will do to please the clients, so they come back and more user buy CIV VII

It's still bad and unfinished. I'm enjoying it despite its problems, but oh wow it has a lot of them. I just fell through the Nexus this morning. If they had fixed the fundamentals (mobs and their fire passing through stuff, and multiplayer sync) then they might have done a bit better, though probably still never hit their peak again. They've delivered pretty much everything else they promised, but those two things are still bad and there are lots of other irritations besides.

I never played that game. I just heard the drama at release and didn't buy it then. Later I heard they fixed a lot of stuff but for me any potential interest was gone. So if you're having fun with the game I'm happy for you but thanks for giving a bit of an honest inside look.

I just thought of NMS because it popped back up in the news from time to time regarding fixes and having been a redemption story. But even with a redemption story the game still could never really recover from its disastrous launch.

If anyone has a an actual example though of a single player game that became more popular over time I'd happy to check the game and its circumstances out.

That's true. Most games in all genres peak during launch. But only a few can maintain a strong a player count months or even years after launch. Such as Counter-Strike or GTA.
Civ 6 now has double the players as Civ 7...

21.6k 24-hour peak for 7

That's literally more than double the player count.
VII is just way too raw. Should have stayed in the oven for like a year more. I see quite a bit of promise with its ideas and design, but I fear that releasing the game so early might stunt its success.

Maybe they can turn it around, but I dunno... seems to be a long and tough road ahead of them for now.

Also, VI has been on super-heavy >85% sales for the past few months. Getting Civ 6 Anthology for 10-20 or so bucks is hell of a deal for newbies to the franchise. And now that they are seeing mixed reception to VII, they might not even “convert” to VII (the new shiny release) players any time soon either with its 70 dollar asking price and DLC already prepped and ready to land.

Yea, right now I'm thinking about starting another Civ-playthrough... however I'm looking into Civ5 or Civ6, not even considering playing Civ7 due to so many downgrades compared to 5 and 6...
