Just bought the game, which DLCs should I get?
It's self explanatory, I know that Civ V came into it's best face with all the DLCs, but does VI needs the same? Or should I prioritize some before others?

The most important one is Gathering Storm. You'll get the gameplay mechanics from rise and fall as well, just not the 2 civs that come with. GS & R&F are major expansions that add a lot of gameplay mechanics, victory conditions and add a lot of depth to the game.

All the other DLCs are at your choice & at your leisure. The packs add civs but also cool optional gameplay mechanics (they call them modes, but they can be activated simultaneously). These mechanics are not as expansive as those in GS or R&F.

So for the biggest impact and bang for your buck, you just buy Gathering Storm. I've picked up all the other DLC over time (they go on sale often) but you'll get a better sense of what you'd like as you play. Enjoy!

For me, all of them. You should have purchased the anthology. It contains everything.

The two expansions add major mechanics to the game (with a "ruleset" dropdown in game creation so you can turn them off). Everything else is just ... more. More civs and leaders, more scenarios, more "game modes" you can choose for a little extra spice on occasion, and a sprinkling of stuff you can build or natural wonders to find.

Collectively, all those DLCs are a lot of extra stuff. The two expansions bring the civ/leader total to about twice what it is with the base game, and the full collection of DLCs doubles the number of leaders again.

If you want the more important DLCs but don't feel the need for every single leader, that's what the "Platinum" package is for. "Anthology" is everything.

Get the expansions or the game is dreadfully boring. The DLC are w/e, no major damage done if you skip them.

Well some of the DLC add the game modes.

I found the base game to be all but unplayable without GS at least,

Could someone explain how Gathering Storm will give you the mechanics of Rise & Fall since it is a complete different expansion?
jmerry82 Jun 16, 2024 @ 3:58pm
Sure, it's a different expansion, but it includes most of earlier expansion anyway. The Gathering Storm ruleset includes all of the mechanics from the Rise and Fall expansion, plus some new ones.

If you have GS but not RaF, or deactivate RaF in the mod management menu, here's what you don't get:
- The ability to play with the RaF ruleset. GS or vanilla only.
- The ability to play with the RaF civs and leaders. No Korea, Zulu, etc.

All the DLC are aren't rated very well.. I'm tempted as well but I might just wait until Civ 7 instead.

With the recent discount, I strongly recommend at least Gathering Storm & Rise and Fall.
