Connecting Cities
I always build cities close to the capital and try to have a clear path to each. I do this (right or wrong for defense in war). I've watched some you tube videos (how to win at science) and their cities are pretty far from each other. Wouldn't you be concerned in getting one city sacked? I've played Civ on and off and by no means an expert

Thanks

I typically run internal trade routes in the early game just to set up those roads. Once I have some decent road network I then try to maximize good routes to other civs.
I prefer to keep citiy centers within 6 hexes of each other but no closer than five some overlap is okay but too much looks awful.

Regarding defense ... cities don't just get sacked out of nowhere in Civ 6. Even the basic 200 HP at a strength based on your toughest unit is enough to take a few hits, and walled cities are much harder targets than that due to the greatly reduced damage from melee and moderately reduced damage from ranged attacks.

You might place a few cities, and especially encampments, based on defensive terrain. But most of the time, you'll be placing your cities based on the terrain they claim to work and put districts on.

My rule of thumb there - a four-tile distance between cities is cramped, and I don't like to do it unless it's the only good way to claim a particular region. Five tiles distance is normal. Six or seven tiles distance is long, and I'd rather not do that too often unless I'm deliberately planning for extremely large cities. And anything beyond that is a deliberate stretch, usually something like colonizing a new island.

The closer, the better. But it’s a general case. It will depend of the land. How are your adgency bonuses, how luxuries are placed, etc.
The how to win by science video you watched is probably outdated (or bad)

City placement depends on a number of factors, who I am playing, what map type I am on, resource availability, mountains and rivers, oceans, where the city states are, and finally where the 'S.O.B.'s are.

It depends on the map, map size, how many players are in the game, civilization's abilities, etc.

For Example: Portugal is best played with coastal cites which are connected by harbors.
