"Civilization VI" is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Bin.
Hello all, I downloaded the game to my Mac yesterday and can't open the game. It says: '"Civilization VI" is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Bin.' Can someone help please? Thank you:steamsad:

Just so you're aware, the Mac and Linux versions are out of date and no longer supported. I play on Linux, so I can run the Windows version through Proton, but it doesn't seem like that's an option for Mac. This probably isn't related to the issue you're having, as the native Mac version should at least still be able to launch.

Looking up the error message you got, it sounds like your antivirus may have flagged a file as a security concern. This could be a false positive, but you might want to try uninstalling the game and fully removing any leftover files, then reinstalling the game from Steam.

For the people experiencing this issue, Aspyr has responded with a possible fix:
  1. Reinstall the Civilization VI. (dont have to reinstall) just check integrity or skip to step 3

  2. Select "Play" from the Steam library.

  3. After the "Verifying" prompt appears and completes, close the damaged error prompt.

  4. Then, open the Mac System Settings.

  5. Select "Privacy and Security".

  6. Select "Security Settings"

  7. In the Security Settings, you should see a prompt saying "Civilization VI was block..."

  8. Click the "Open Anyway" button under this text.

  9. Enter your system password if prompted.

  10. Then select "Open" on the security prompt.

  11. Your game should now launch

The Mac version is up to date and supported, including the monthly challenges. Once you get into the game, you've got everything including the monthly challenges and the most recent "Leader Pass" DLC.

This is just an issue with the Mac OS security system; it requires a "we're legit" developer certificate, Aspyr's certificate lapsed, and then you get an uninformative error message when the system refuses to install this "unsigned" app.

Thank you very much for the help. Unfortunately, this might apply to older versions of Mac OS. I'm using Sequoia 15.1.1 right now and there is no "Security Settings" in the "Privacy and Security" section. The Mac OS is driving me nuts!

Ah, I see. It must just be the Linux version that is out of date then. Since Aspyr was handling both the Linux and Mac ports, I assumed that the Mac port would have similar issues as the Linux port.

It's a little more complicated than that. On the Linux side, Aspyr has had to deal with the growing ability to run Windows applications directly without needing to port them.

As such, Aspyr is generating less and less revenue from their Linux porting efforts. My assumption has been this is why they abandoned their Civ VI port. Their Mac port still drives profits, though.

Basically, Linux users are just Windows users at this point.
