Easier to get into? Hard to answer that. It's A LOT more complex a game - especially after the two expansions and New Frontier pass stuff.
Districts, Natural Wonders, Natural Disasters, Governors, Loyalty, additional game modes...
Yeah. Much better.
With RF and GS, I think Civ 6 is better than Civ 5. I did not enjoy vanilla Civ 6 very much.
So Gathering Storm will get you all the gameplay improvements, which should keep you busy for a while. When you are in the mood for some new civs, there is plenty of content to choose from.
And then from there, it is my opinion that every expansion massively improved Civ6. It isn't even like I hated Civ V, I have more than a 1000 hours in it according to Steam. Probably more as that does not include playing on a laptop in offline mode as well.
Comparing them at launch is even more laughable, IMO again of course. Civ V vanilla at launch vs Civ 6 at launch were even further apart IMO. I found Civ V unplayable until the 2 expansions. The first expansion definitely made it into a playable game, for me. The second one made it into a very good game, for me. Again though, even after playing Civ V right up until Sept 2016, as soon as I played Civ 6, I have not touched Civ V even once.
The best argument for Civ V IMO, is the AI. While I don't think the AI is actually better in Civ 5, it is playing such a simpler game than Civ 6 that it appears (and is relatively equivalent) to having better AI. And that is using the community mods to get Civ 5 to that level. That same argument isn't quite as valid (still valid, just not nearly as much so) when playing with Civ V AI with no mods to help it.
I didn't like civ 6 at first, but I have grown to like it. Same with Civ 5.
Civ 4 is my all time favorite, but it is dated, and I have played it sufficiently.
