Yes, 5 is better than 6, and 6 is better than 5. It all depends.

Get Civ VI and play with AI to get an understanding of the game, then do online multiplayer with friends for the best experience.

Entirely dependent on what you want from a game. If you prefer pail chatreuse over brown go with 6. And yes some of the criticisms I've seen of 5 and 6 are entirely that vapid. From a pure game play experience neither is, in my opinion as good as iv.

Both are great. But, if you go from civ 5 to civ 6 in the future, you may have a hard time coming back to play 5. Civ 6 is just much cooler with city mechanics. Also civ 5 punishes you for going wide with you cities and kinda forces you to go tall, making domination victory so painful to achieve. Civ 6 also expands on things like religion(new victory condition), diplomacy, rng events and great expansions. Three main expansions for civ 6, add even more mechanics that you can turn on/off as you feel. Even with all the dlc's civilization 5 feels just so... empty, compared to full dlc civ 6.

Civ IV then Civ V. Civ VI is garbage.

Just remember that micromanaging a bunch of claptrap and trying to work out where to place your district to maximize its value based on the appeal of the current tile bonuses from adjacent tiles and other such gobbledygook isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Please note there is no right or wrong answer to the OP.s question. People simply like different things.

Old World is better .

They're both good, for different reasons. Plain vanilla (no mods outside official expansions), I'd say I enjoy Civ 6 more. But Civ 5 has a mod set called (I think) CBP, which drastically changes the way your cities and empire work, and it improves the game IMHO.

Vanilla Civ 5 is basically Civ 4 on a hex map. CBP is a lot like the Rise of Mankind mod for Civ 4 in how it changes the game. But the base versions are both basically the same game, and incremental changes from earlier games. Civ 6 made some big changes that breathe new life into the game.

Civ VI is fun if you don't mind the fact that min-maxing requires an absurd amount of time and energy due to district and wonder placement cluster-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. If that doesn't bother you, then it's a fun game.
