i looked around for discussions about it, and the best i found was this

and that's still not a good answer. so all i have for an answer is, "maybe". sorry.
Most of them provided nothing, a few provided +1 food or production on a tile or two.
It wasn't entirely stopped, but I got the feeling it was somewhat impeded. Naturally I dismissed it as a disappointed, biased perception.
That said, I don't know.
It's a side effect of game iteration more than anything. When they reworked floodplains with GS, Egypt suffered. Hopefully they can look at them again at some point. (Gandhi suffers a similar problem with all the changes to Religion)
