Missing characters suddenly?

Um, it seems I can't find at least Dido and maybe a couple of others in the leaders list anymore. Is this game shrinking or what? Usually features are added, no removed, over time.

The developers have not deliberately removed any leaders from the game, so something specific to your situation is responsible for their absence. You may have inadvertently selected a rules set that does not support the missing leaders. If that is not the cause, then you may have disabled some of your DLCs, or they may have been uninstalled, or they may have been corrupted resulting in the game's inability to use them. Another possible cause would be a mod which either deliberately or due to a bug has disabled those leaders.

I have no extras installed at all and never have. I tried the 'validate game files' and that said all was OK. But the character list is definitely missing Dido still.

Dido requires Gathering Storm. Check to make sure that Gathering Storm is installed (in your Steam DLC list and in the game itself under Additional Content -> Mods), and that you are using the Gathering Storm rules set when you create your games. If you normally use a configuration to create your games, try without loading that configuration. If everything works as expected without the configuration then it may be the problem; in that case, delete your configuration(s) and recreate them.

but did you delete the file mods.sqlite before you verified files? it is a database file, not only for workshop mods, even though it's called "mods.sqlite". it can also block access to official dlc you've paid for if it's somehow corrupt.
