Unlike many games in the genre that have a few factions which play in radically different ways, the "civilizations" in Age of Empires share most of their unit and technology options, differing only in a few spots - unique units and abilities.
People seem to like comparing the series because they both have that historical theme, but the gameplay is radically different and they simply appeal to different audiences.
One of the two is much more action oriented and requires a high-reaction time while the other is more about thinking your strategies through and making your move when you are ready without having the pressure of time.
And guess what? While seeing lots of action can be a lot of fun (especially if you're younger) the constant pressure of having to be fast with clicks and so on can be very exhausting while just looking at the map and seeing something evolve turn by turn can be quite relaxing...
