Upgrade Units With Production?

Is there a way to upgrade units through production (like move them on a hex with an encampment or something) instead of having to use gold? If not, I think that it would be helpful if you could use a unit as half of an upgraded / new unit and then just spend the time on the hex for however long it would take to finish building a new unit as an alternative way to upgrade units.

Not that I know of. Also keep in mind, that you will need resources in the later game and that there are also policy cards to reduce the cost.
