But it's helped improve the stability of multiplayer games in the Civ Player's League community quite tremendously.
So for that one, I'd suggest you at least search the workshop for "multiplayer helper" mod and read through the mod page. It may answer your questions better than I can regarding autodownload and whatnot.
MPH+BBG+BBS (better balanced game / better balanced start), to my understanding, are commonly used even in pug/open lobby MP games.
MPH was probably updated recently. As you have enabled auto-download, you probably had dowloaded an outdated version at some time, and there's conflicts with the new version your system is trying to install now.
Unsubscribe manually and properly in the workshop and it should work again. Only three mods are mandatory to play online usually (unless you're playing with random weird people), MPH, BBG and BBS so it can be handled manually without problem.
