Combined arms is called combined arms. I think its much more interesting when you have to have your armies composed of various types of units as opposed to just spamming one unit type all the time. GDRs kill the need for having smart army compositions such as Anti cav, Ranged, Melee, and siege units supported by Air support. GDRs in the development cycle of Gathering Storm were going to originally just be 1 unit in a long list of other units. it was supposed to merge the heavy and light Calvary trees into one, which is kinda neat. but it being the only future unit is somewhat boring.
Also realistically Giant death robots IRL would be worthless on the battlefield. Its sorta like the logical fallacy that the Maus tank or the Panzer Landcruiser ratte would have been able to turn the tide of WW2 in favor of the Axis powers, instead of just being awesome target practice for allied fighter bombers and something for allied troops to gawk at when it runs out of fuel. Honestly, Even if we suspend real life. in Battletech, a world dominated by battle mechs, air support, and ships are still extremely valuable and can make or break an offensive
Also if you wanna talk super units, the heroes and legends mode is a much better example of Super units as a gameplay mechanic, noticed how I didn't complain about Heroes and Legends. Its because that its not as big of an issue. Its not even as much that GDRs are OP(which I think they are) but more that there no variety to future-era warfare.
Civ Beyond Earth actually Had Giant Death robots, but guess what? they weren't OP in that game. it had Super units, but they were much better balanced and Civ Beyond Earth just had a lot more variety when it came to future-era warfare to begin with.
You have exactly the same issue with almost all kind of specific units. bots not using properly siege weapons. bots not using aircraft properly. bots not using battle rams properly. Bots not using ships... at all XD. It's an AI design issue, not a GDR design issue.
