Vampire not levelling up

Whenever an adjacent unit dies near my vampire, he isn't getting any combat strength bonus.

Has anyone seen their vampire get more combat strength?

Yes, but you have to select your vampire, then move your mouse to an enemy unit, now you can see the buff.
But yes, it should be more intuitiv.

Buff should appear of you select the unit and hover your mouse over its "portrait". All (well, don't know if all, but 100% the most relevant ones) buffs and penalties are listed there, like the ones Gran Colombia gains from a Comandante General, Natural Wonder buffs (like Spear of Fionn, for example), etc, etc, etc. Hope this helps you
