I found one great person (Marina Raskova) that gives a single retirement boost of one slot so that could be the case as they are in cities captured from AI civs, although it seems this can only be used once, so could still also be weirdness of deploying planes or relocating them to another city's city centre or an airstrip if it varies the numbers to account for their 'home' aerodrome or something (perhaps for where they'd return if able should their new home be lost), will have to experiment as I move planes around! Wonder if aircraft carriers are also included? Likewise will have to look closer next play. Might just be where planes were originally built that may no longer be there.
Or maybe the AI gets a buff on aerodromes so it can have a bigger airforce with a small city count.
Wish Civ VI explained more stuff, there's a lot it doesn't tell you about the 'whys'. The wikis don't always have stuff from the smaller additional packs in the detail so there are some omissions there too, maybe there's something in a smaller pack that affects air capacity.
Could of course just be a bug with repairing a pillaged aerodrome that had a boost and it errors and adds the boost again, or something allows more great person charges or Raskova can do that more than once or who knows lol, not complaining as I need the slots (AI has lots of fighters/bombers and I suspect explodey things)
That's not correct. Even prior to GS the progression was 4+2+2. There's no way to get 10 0r 12 in an unmodded game
I assure you there is, even if its a bug there is, my unmodded R&F game has aerodromes showing 10 and 12 slots (one in my capital which was captured by a now extinct ai civ and which I took back and a few others here and there.)
But yes the hangar gives 2 extra, the airport another 2 for 8 base, that great person explains 1 extra (which I'm wondering does it also add 1 to the buildings which would give 3 extra? But then it can't be that as it would only affect one of the aerodromes.)
So I'm thinking it's one or more of five things:
A bug when pillaged hangars/airports are rebuilt or maybe from the pillaging in the first place or owner changes etc etc (hmm can you do this with cash and maybe that's bugged and treats it as a new building rather than a repair?)
Something added in one of the packs that's not listed in the wiki that I've missed as affecting this particular game (others have asked about the 10/12 a.i. aerodromes but I've not found a thread with an answer as yet so it seems a bit of a nobody knows!)
Something to do with aircraft carriers
Something to do with airbases built by military engineers and moving planes round
Something to do with basing planes in a different city to the aerodrome where the new home city has no aerodrome (maybe the other city gives you an extra slot as it's acting as a base for the plane)
One of those things where your curiosity bugs you and you just want to know (especially as it could be useful to know!)
1) Please post a screenshot to Steam
2) Please list the game ruleset you're using (edit- ignore this, I see where you said R&F)
3) Just so we're 100% clear- you have no mods installed? Not just no mods you think don't change the game, no mods at all? A screenshot of the mod loader showing nothing active would be a bonus.
4) additional basic info like the Leader you're playing, the difficulty, and the map would be relevant as well.
I'm not asking these things because I want to give you a hard time, but this is how bug hunting works.
99% of the time the issue is user error or a mod, so it pays to verify the issue and eliminate the most common cause. Once we're sure of that I or someone else will do some digging, and/or you can post a bug report. Another thing you can consider doing is if you've been keeping autosaves, go back into older saves and see if you can track what happened. This will go a long way toward replicating the bug if you have older saves.
Edit-Are the ones with extra slots cities you captured from the AI, and did they already have Aerodromes when you did so? I did a google search and found a Reddit post from 3 years ago where an AI city had 12 slots.
