Dude, you can literally get every add-on made for this game for $18 more than the base game right now.

The expansions are, the other ones that are just civilizations are not I guess. They just give you more civs to play and more to play against.

I got the anthology, and it was worth it.

I've played it mostly without the DLCs, it works fine. DLCs add some mechanics though, and new civilizations and leaders. But you'll be fine without them if you don't want them.

It does seem to be the most complete game of all the CIVs without the DLC but there are enough special editions now that include the DLC for not much extra (or indeed all of the games in the CIV series back to III that it does not matter as much)

There are definitely layers to DLC releases for games.... planned, unplanned and due to popular demand.

The Sims 4 is currently giving away one of their million expansions for the game after making the base game free to play. Without getting nasty about it, the reality for monetization models for developers are, with a modicum of popularity, the more charged DLCs you release for a game, in relation with its price points to the value that it contributes, the smaller segment of the potential existing fanbase would be invested in purchasing the expansions.

In Civ 6's defence, the additional content up to the anthology edition is well-rounded and supplementary to the core game, but I can't speak to the full-listed retail prices. As a new game release you understand devs pushing premium pricing towards the received popularity of such release and there probably is only a small window for that until it goes over a certain limit where sales are limited to consumer affordability, where you see sales continue month over month as consumers save for purchases.

Now maybe the business model always has been to factor the sales prices, but twofold, if a sale is somewhat guaranteed, its not really a sale anymore. Maybe theyre doing other games and the industry a favor by maintaining higher RRPs. I cant speak for the sales figures of non-sale prices but I imagine it has waned. In corporations as well im sure the decision regarding price adjustments are not taken lightly.

But back to the point, when the DLC starts becoming five times the price of the game while adding less than half the value of the core game, part of me starts to believe some of the content could have been part of the game.

But as said above, the complete edition is available at fairly well prices. Like when I played that Mars colony building game and after 40 hours I write yeah I cant wait to plant trees on Mars only to realize its a paywalled feature, how deflationary.....

For that you want all the features the game has to offer.

I was on the fence after buying the base game for $6, never played any Civ game before. Two games in I decided it was worth it to get the two main DLCs while on sale. Under $20 for all that? Good deal imo.

Edit: Capitalization

You will be fine without the DLC but it's really cheap right now and adds a ton of content. The game will last you a life time (or until 7 releases,) so why not have it all at your fingertips?

The only DLC I consider necessary is "Gathering Storm", but you may as well get the pack with all of them. Its just 10-20 bucks now.
