By the sword
I took ?By the Sword" as one of my religion choices. When conquoring Norway (Harald Varangian) it functioned, and all their cities converted, and I got era score and an event in the history log too for each one.

Later, when conquoring Greece (Pericles) it didn't work anymore. I took all nine of their cities and got no free conversions.

Now I'm conquoring America (Lincoln), and it has worked for two of the seven cities I've taken.

What gives?

Harald had established a religion, but I can't remember if all his cities had converted to it. Pericles had not established a religion, and all his cities were just pantheon. America has established a religion, but only the holy city converted to it. That's one city that didn't convert when conquored. (Looks like I'll need an inquisition after all).

But why is this belief working so inconsistently? Bugged??

I don't recall the choice "by the sword", is it introduced by a mod?

I recall seeing it somewhere but not what it did and finding some about Civ 6 Religious beliefs of either sort short of playing the game until you get a first religion is like pulling eye teeth. there is nothing in the civilopaedia and the fan forum is unusually blank as well

Okay it isn't available in GS. Unless it's in one of the alternate game modes like pirates of whatever. I Just ran the last twenty turns I had in a current game where I built stonehenge and got the first religion and it wasn't there.

It is a mod, I hadn't realized. I have Religions Expanded which adds it as a belief, and the page for that mod explains what the in-game tooltips do not:

By the Sword: Capturing a city with a melee unit or when a melee unit is adjacent to that city automatically converts it to your majority Religion.

I will have to pay more attention to what unit I use to capture the cities in any future games. I think mostly I was using cavalry. I tend to whittle the city defenses down with ranged and then make the final strike from out of range with a cavalry unit. I'm now not sure whether that counts.

PS: Religion Expanded is the 39th most popular Civ 6 mod on the workshop ordering by 'most subscribed' (second screen, 9th mod down). It's very good.

From the info you posted, it seems like a horse unit will not convert a city unless a melee unit is already next to the city.
I don't have the mod, but based on the wording that's probably the case; cavalry units and melee units are differentiated from each other
