Linux support silently dropped???[RESOLVED]
Did they just drop Linux support?

Sid Meier's Civilization VI/2KLauncher/LauncherPatcher.exe: cannot execute binary file

And Linux is STILL advertised as supported system.
WTF? Am I missing something?

Yeah, Aspyr basically gave up on Linux after a series of buggy updates last December. They haven't said anything public yet, but they rolled back to the latest working version of the port and have been advising people who complain to "ask for a refund". :(

Fortunately (and this may be the root of the issue), Civ VI runs flawlessly under Proton. Eventually Valve needs to default to using that, but for the moment both Firaxis and Aspyr still maintain the fiction that the Aspyr port is still being maintained.

Right now, you just need to force Civ to use the Proton compatibility tool in the preferences panel, and everything will work.

Well, fiction fails, as new update with 'launcher' has broken basic compatibility.

I can run game in proton, but game MUST NOT be advertised as Linux compatible if I use Proton. It seems rather scummy.

In today's world, most Windows games (and other apps) run just fine under Wine/Proton. Some even work better.

Honestly, there's really no point in quibbling over whether Windows games are truly "Linux compatible" any more. Most are now running on Linux as of they were running on Windows.

I am not complaining about fact that game is no longer Linux .I am just stating that its false advertising. Period.

Imagine you buy EV and its advertised as Tesla Charger compatible and you are given 10 kilo adapter with it, that you must deploy every time you use Tesla charging station. Technically you can, but are you happy about it?

True. :)

Technically, the old Aspyr port should still work. If they don't keep it going, we should be able to get either Firaxis or Steam to delist it.

By default it doesn't any more, looks like last promo removed Linux binaries and replaced them with 'windows launcher'. Hence this thread

Aspyr should come out with an update (at least a rollback) soon if they are going to continue to say they support Linux.

I have been in discussion with Aspyr support since 20th Aug ... I have played Civ6 on linux for 1046 hours then it downloaded an update and ever since struggling to get it working. Strange thing is I can get it running without Proton (I only learned about proton in trying to find a fix) but it only runs 2 sessions before another "downloading update" borks it again. At 2x6GB and 2x >30 minutes each time around, I am not happy about this !

Currently trying to find out if Proton is adding a restriction on video card. Proton versions (experimental, 8 and 7) all state they can't find my video card. I know my nVidia GT730 (with latest driver 470.199.02) is old - but it is within the official Windows game spec, and was running fine 1000+ hours !

Yeah, that card is old enough that Nvidia dropped support for it a couple of years ago. That shouldn't stop Proton from using it, though.

Could you try going back to even older versions of Proton? I know one user here had better results with version 6 (they had a different problem, though).

"Nvidia dropped support for it" ??? Really ? i noticed an update downloading just last week to version 470.199.02 ? I think you mean that YOUR late model graphics card uses a newer driver (535 ?) and therefore everything else is rubbish ?

Ah, forgive me. :) I didn't mean to cast aspersions on your card.

But yeah, dropping the card from the main driver baseline does mean that software that depends upon features of that baseline may not work properly. You'd hope that wasn't the case, but as the two driver sets diverge over time, more issues will eventually crop up. :(

I would like to congratulate you on the lifespan of your card! My own GT 730 passed away years ago, after many, many years of dependable service. Heck, I still have it sitting in my back room. Here, I'll take a photo...

.exe kind of infers it's using the Windows version, no? I just launched it on my Debian Sid and it's working. Just went straight to the video, then the menu to start the game.

Game originally had Native Linux binary launching. I never changed settings for it when it stopped working. Why all of the sudden it started to open up launcher.exe?

I suspect you are running windows version of the game.
But look at the sales page, still it has linux steam logo on it.

Allright, i tried alternative, i run Civ6 under "Steam Linux Runtime", it downloaded 6 gigs of data and now launches.
ps aux |grep -ie "wine|proton"
no interesting output.

So looks like we need to run Steam Linux Runtime to run game natively

Yeah, that should be the Aspyr port. The other compatibility options should all be based on Proton.

If you hadn't selected any compatibility modes before, it may be that the default mode has changed.
