Fortunately (and this may be the root of the issue), Civ VI runs flawlessly under Proton. Eventually Valve needs to default to using that, but for the moment both Firaxis and Aspyr still maintain the fiction that the Aspyr port is still being maintained.
Right now, you just need to force Civ to use the Proton compatibility tool in the preferences panel, and everything will work.
I can run game in proton, but game MUST NOT be advertised as Linux compatible if I use Proton. It seems rather scummy.
In today's world, most Windows games (and other apps) run just fine under Wine/Proton. Some even work better.
Honestly, there's really no point in quibbling over whether Windows games are truly "Linux compatible" any more. Most are now running on Linux as of they were running on Windows.
Imagine you buy EV and its advertised as Tesla Charger compatible and you are given 10 kilo adapter with it, that you must deploy every time you use Tesla charging station. Technically you can, but are you happy about it?
True. :)
Technically, the old Aspyr port should still work. If they don't keep it going, we should be able to get either Firaxis or Steam to delist it.
Aspyr should come out with an update (at least a rollback) soon if they are going to continue to say they support Linux.
Currently trying to find out if Proton is adding a restriction on video card. Proton versions (experimental, 8 and 7) all state they can't find my video card. I know my nVidia GT730 (with latest driver 470.199.02) is old - but it is within the official Windows game spec, and was running fine 1000+ hours !
Yeah, that card is old enough that Nvidia dropped support for it a couple of years ago. That shouldn't stop Proton from using it, though.
Could you try going back to even older versions of Proton? I know one user here had better results with version 6 (they had a different problem, though).
Ah, forgive me. :) I didn't mean to cast aspersions on your card.
But yeah, dropping the card from the main driver baseline does mean that software that depends upon features of that baseline may not work properly. You'd hope that wasn't the case, but as the two driver sets diverge over time, more issues will eventually crop up. :(
I would like to congratulate you on the lifespan of your card! My own GT 730 passed away years ago, after many, many years of dependable service. Heck, I still have it sitting in my back room. Here, I'll take a photo...

I suspect you are running windows version of the game.
But look at the sales page, still it has linux steam logo on it.
ps aux |grep -ie "wine|proton"
no interesting output.
So looks like we need to run Steam Linux Runtime to run game natively
Yeah, that should be the Aspyr port. The other compatibility options should all be based on Proton.
If you hadn't selected any compatibility modes before, it may be that the default mode has changed.
