Societies, Heroes - there is some fantasy element, and could alter the game by a lot, sometimes rewrite your civ. Keep as mode.
Barbarian Clan - this one is actually so basic, that could be in base game. Even if it makes barbs more visious.
Anyway, I second turning this stuff off. The more settings, the better, for me.
Haven't noticed the AI struggling too much. My last game ended abruptly to a religious defeat on turn 215.
The important thing is as the OP mentioned, you have the OPTION of selecting this mode or not. Let's face it, one of the main draws of this game is the remarkable variables and customization you have available to you. I doubt if you would ever find any two players who agree on exactly the same game variables. I would never try to convince anyone to play in the Zombie mode, you just select the game variables you like. And, this is the way it should be if you are going to invest hours or even days in a game.
Who knows what Civ 7 will be like, but my vote goes to leaving the Zombie OPTION in.
But in a game with Vampires and Heroes, Zombies are an option. No one HAS to play with this option, but I enjoy the challenge. One mode that was in previous Civ games that is missing in Civ 6 is the mode where everyone is AT WAR with everyone else from Turn 1. Of course, if you play only for a Domination Victory you could treat it that way. By throwing the Zombies in the game, it is like you have a larger, tougher Barbarian civ you are always at war with - not really an option for peace and it lasts all game.
I find myself suddenly looking forward to playing a Civ with a lot of City State synergy feverishly trying to protect the camps that spawn outside of the snowy far reaches of the map.
Actually, I forget, my default settings starts with 1 city state. Not sure if it's a bug or not, but when I have set it to 0 in the past no barbarians convert into City States on Barbarian Clans mode. So I set it to the minimum of 1.
