Detailed and well discussed rebutal. well said man.
Not sure where you get the minority thing from. While I don't go by the results of that poll too much, it states: "The community generally wants small changes to the Civ VI art style, especially to mountains, jungles, forests, the border lines and the overall ‘vibrant design’." That is my point of view as well. It does not need massive, sweeping changes, just a few tweaks.
No, they didnt? That statement I made with the quotes is the authors conclusion based on the information of the poll. It is not an opinion, it is a fact based on his findings. If I recall correctly, certain aspect such as mountains, jungle, forest, borders, etc, were heavily disliked.
While most people want changes to mountains, jungles, forests etc. they also liked the look of buildings, units, water, coast/ cliffs and wonders. Also, the opinions on the overall design are very mixed, the opposite vibe of what I got on the Steam forum.
From just looking at this forum most people here want BIG improvements or refuse to buy the game at all, while claiming that the community at large feels that way. This survey outright disproves that claim, with 55.6% respondants only wanting small improvements (meaning, they are fine with the way it looks now, just not very excited), and 30.2% wanting bigger improvements.
Wanting improvements /= they don't want or like what they're seeing though. The comments on the survey on Reddit are telling of this.
Even so, more people are fine with the design as is (9.4%) than those who are boycotting (4.9%)
The fact that its mixed in itself is a problem, from my point of view. Most games with a unique art style get a few people who don't like it, while the rest are okay... With Civilization IV, on the other hand, the community is completely divided, so improvements should probably be made.
We have already confirmed that some areas (mountains, forests, jungle... Blah, blah.) have an almost universal dislike against them, and they can be improved without much effort.
With only 7,000 responses and the expected sales figures to be in the millions, it's like asking 100 people in Kentucky who they're voting for and publishing a national poll based on the results...
By all means, feel free to propose a realistic alternative. Hint, there ain't one, thats why its silly when people make points like this. Literally the only thing anyone has to go on, within reason, is the opinions of themselves and how it stacks up to that of others on forums, media, etc.
I think the main factor swaying people's opinions both ways is the fact that it is a very different style than the last 2 Civ games, even if improvements were made I don't see the general opinion (based on the survey) changing, at least until we see gameplay.
Sigh. I'll be more direct. This answer is 100% more useful than anything you have provided, or anything else anyone else has provided. It holds the right of "most accurate information" based on what is on hand. It can and should be used on the basis that there is nothing better.
Actually, yes. People are more forgiving of problems if those problems are less expensive. The idea of AAA games is that they are high cost, and high quality, with the intent to appealing to as many as possible. If people are "mixed", then the AAA game did something wrong.
I'm not fanboy bashing the poll. Hell, it supports my position that most people are fine with the overall aesthetic, but it's not something I would quote. It's not a good poll.
