I think it is the Titan god Atlas, from Greek mythology. You can read more about him on wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlas_(mythology)

That is absolutely who it is.

Atlas is also depicted in the original Non-DLC CiV-Main Menu Art.

it's a metaphor. it's the games lead designer feeling the weight of expectation for this game.

Thats Atlas a Greec god that gave hes name to the Atlantic ocean and to the Atlas mountain chain in north Africa.

Unfortunately, it is not actually atlas...
It is basically a copy of William Brodie's "Hercules". Yeah you read it right.

Interesting, seems like Brodie didn't know his Greek mythology.
Since the Civ one does not depict exactly that statue I'd still say the one in Civ is supposed to be Atlas.

Edit: Ok, *I* am the one who doesn't know his Greek mythology, apparently. See Martoq's post below.

Makes sense since one of the Twelve Labors of Heracles/Hercules was to hold the Earth for Atlas while Atlas went to retreive the Golden Apple for Heracles/Hercules. Of course if memory serves Atlas tried to leave Heracles/Hercules holding Earth, but Heracles/Hercules asked him to hold it for just a moment while he readjusted himself to hold it. Of course like any good hero he left Atlas holding the Earth and looking like a fool for falling for it.

Nah that guy is just Bob.

but seriously its mostlikely atlas as it is half human half mountain and atlas pictures the mountains of the same name. So Heracles is already gone again.

Why "unfortunately"?

Using Hercules instead of the more classic Atlas generates discussion and provides the opportunity for people to learn a little.

Heracles totally trolled Atlas

I totally believe everytime there is a golden apple involved there is also trolling. I wonder why that is.
