Only as Jerusalem, the city state. It doesn't appear there is going to be a Jewish/Israeli playable Civ.

For people that want Jewish/hebrew as a civ I don't think that it will ever happen since for most of history they were a very scattered people who lived almost every where.
The only jewish nation that I know of is the state of Isreal and civ doesn't do existing nations/goverments (only older versions of existing nations) in order to stop controversy.

There were some ancient Hebrew kingdoms as well. The one that most people are probably thinking of when the ask for a 'Hebrew civilization' is the Kingdom of Israel (also called the United Monarchy), ruled by the biblical figures of Saul, David, and Solomon in succession, normally estimated to be from about 1050 to 930 BCE.

The biggest problem in my estimation about the topic is it will inevitably lead to debates about how the Bible compares to archaeology, and whether the materials available are enough justification to include the Israelites in the game.

Ultimately, I think that keeping Jerusalem as a city-state is the best course of action. That city on its own has been plenty influential on our development as a species, regardless of who was living there at any given time, be they Israelites, other Canaanites, Romans, Arab Muslims, European Crusaders, Ottoman Turks, or modern Jews.

you are right all of those civs still exist currently but not in the form that they are shown in the game.

for example the american civs in game are the old identity one those of adventure and exploration the land were every one had a chance to become whatever they wanted.

personally I don't know of any great jewish emipres that are remembered by almost everybody on the planet except for a few events written down inside the bible but those aren't enoughor even reliable enough to build a civ from.

Judea was powerful, especially for a small province, lol. Their revolts were strong enough even against hellenic power in a region but they were most agressive against roman domination there. Romans had to burn it to the ground and destroy everything. Still, game has Jerusalem representing this province of Judea and also a religion.

Personally, i wouldn't be against Israel as a civ. They could have the Iron Dome as a unique unit along with the Mossad for a unique espionage unit/building/whatever. As it has already been made clear however, Firaxis will steer clear of controversy and leave them out - just as they leave out any hint of Nutzi Germany.

Just wait about six months after launch. I'm sure there will be mods for both.

Didn't Civ IV have Israel as a playable nation? I recall that in my playthrough they ending up small and heavily militarised, surrounded on all sides by enemies

In case you're not joking, no.

Only if we can have a Palestinian faction.
Darkwing Jul 25, 2016 @ 7:11am
As far as both Palestine AND Israel go, I think there are enough playable civs that occupied that land already including Assyria, Egypt, Persia, Arabia, Greece, Rome, and the Ottomans. We really don't need another one when there are so many other parts of the world that need recognition in the game if it's going to have any universal appeal.

Let's keep off the modern Israel/Palestine question. It is a topic that tends to lead to huge arguments.
