I applied the fix suggested by Folkesito (https://steamcommunity.com/app/289070/discussions/0/3546050190340176697/?ctp=4#c3589960830785034072) and that makes the game start for me. Running on MacOS Monterey 12.6.1
I used suggestion from stalowa29+***** and it's working now. Spent two days troubleshooting.

I found this in the official mac thread in this forum. Worked for me. I can open and play. all leaders including the new DLC and Julius Caesar are there.

1) Right click on "Sid Meier's Civilization VI" in your Steam Library and choose Properties.
2) In the General section find the Launch Option text field.
3) Copy and paste the following text, making sure to replace "YOUR_USER" with your user's account name, in the Launch Option text field referenced in Step 2:

"/Users/YOUR_USER/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization VI/Civ6.app/Contents/MacOS/Civ6_Exe" %command%

This worked for me like a miracle!! My system is mac OS Big Sur.

it's broken across the board it seems

On Linux, with Flatpaked Steam game launch, but some mods cannot be loaded.

And these mods are official DLC, like Polish Civilization or similar.

If you are already on MacOS 12.6.1 updating to it won't fix the problem. The reason why uninstalling and reinstalling only works for some is because the uninstaller is semi-broken as well (its mentioned on the troubleshooting thread) and doesn't actually remove PC files mistakenly put on Macs. Once you uninstall, you have to go back to the game location and manually delete stuff. I uninstalled and then went to /Macintosh\ HD/Users/%YOUR_USERNAME_HERE%/Library/Application\ Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization VI and the launcher and borked .exe files from windows was still there. Had to manually delete those and THEN restart the computer before reinstalling worked for me. Hope this helps someone, I had to uninstall and reinstall twice because the first time the bad files were left in place.

p.s. mac hides some folders, especially the pc ones. if you go to the finder application, then click "go" at the top menu then "go to folder" you can type ~/Library to go directly to your Library folder without having to put in your username, clicking "show hidden files" also helps. or you could just delete the entire Civilization VI folder and get all the hidden files at once, you are going to be reinstalling anyway so sometimes the hammer approach works best

I have the same problem, and when I rolled back with the "ineedlegacyaccess" beta key, my multiplayer saves won't load. I'm running MacOS 12.3.

Whack ass Firaxis and 2K not giving the devs time to make a build work. Please fix your game and pay your employees for overtime.

I fixed 4294956486 Error with adding following to the Launch options.
Change <USERNAME> to your OS username:
"/Users/<USERNAME>/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization VI/Civ6.app/Contents/MacOS/Civ6_Exe" %command%

This worked for me!

I figured it out. But it did not help the issue where it thinks it needs Mojave or higher now.

UPDATE 2 - I got it to work. Following update to Venture I started getting "Civilization VI” is damaged and can’t be opened." error.

I wend to System Settings > Privacy and Security and scrolled all the way to the bottom. I noticed a notification that Apple didn't allow the Civ 6 to Open. I clicked Open Anyway (it didn't work) and I went back to Steam, and clicked Play. It finally worked. My old save works, and I can see new leaders as well.
Awesome - this worked for me as well. Thank you very much. :)
