Why is Victoria's civilization England and not Great Britain (British Empire)
I've never played a Civilization game but why do they have Victoria leading England only when she was actually Queen of Great Britain (including Scotland) and Ireland.

Why does Scotland get left out? She was their Queen too. Do they plan to add Scottish or Irish civilizations in expansions or is this some kind of oversight or the devs not really understanding British and Irish history?

What have they done in previous games concerning the UK?

Just FYI, Celtish Civilisation is probably on the way. :steammocking:

Probably because they want to leave the option open to have alternate civilization leaders for England from periods before the British Empire.

And, you know, also because nobody cares.

In Civ 5, there was a city state Edinburgh, so Scotland is not included as the English Civ. As when you play in Civ all the city names are English names and none from the United Kingdom.

Pretty sure Victoria led England in Civ4, too.

Also, Civ isn't a series about historical realism. But do rejoice, because this is how Victoria introduces herself:

That sounds really cool. I hope so. Paganism >> Christianity :P

I take it you're not British! Try telling a Scot they're English or an English they're Welsh or an Irish they're British. I think you'll find they not only care...they care a lot!

But looking into it more I think Civilization takes a relaxed view of history and that's for the best. I was just wondering whether there was likely to be different UK factions or full-blown civs in this game.

I'm actually quite interested in Civilization for the first time.

Speaking as a British person, one has to remember that most of the rest of the English-speaking world doesn't seem to quite get the British/English distinction. Plus the civ has always been England in Civ, but a lot of interesting history of England has been as part of the United Kingdom.

Well I'm Australian and I'm only too well aware. But maybe in America they know or care less.

England is the only important part of Britain anyway. ;)

Nationalism isn't welcome here, even as a joke - especially the sort that's doing down nations, which is what you're doing.

They also now have Saladin (who was ruling Egypt+Syria) as leader of "Arabia", with Cairo (you know, the egyptian city) as capital.

So yeah, historic accuarcy gets second rank behind fun of gameplay.

The territory he ruled included Cairo, and the "Egyptian" (by modern understandings) part of it wasn't considered separate. It was all one polity.

Cool. I might have to pick this up. It looks involving yet doesn't seem to take itself too seriously which I like.

Don't know why I haven't been attracted to Civ games before. I've enjoyed Age of Empires which is more RTS and TBS.

Yeah, i know, i'm not debating that. I just wouldnt exactly call that Arabia. Or rather, "The arabian Empire", because that kinda splintered into several smaller parts with several dynasties, of which Saladin's was one.

By the time Saladin popped his clogs, he was ruling pretty much all of the inhabited areas of Arabia.
