how to use siege tower?
I just tried using the siege tower for the first time. I had it next to the city with a bunch of pikemen/men-at-arms. It allowed the units to directly attack the city health bar, ignoring the wall health, as I expected..... once the city was down to zero health I tried to take it and my units just smashed themselves on the wall instead. I assumed at this point the units would just take the city? Why would they still need to attack the wall, which they do hardly any damage to. What is the point of the siege tower, if the units still need to destroy the wall.

the city may have upgraded that wall in the timeframe? in gathering storm, renaissance walls are immune to siege tower.

edit: or if the target civ discovers steel for urban defenses.

Battering Rams only work on Ancient Walls, and Siege Towers only work on Ancient and Medieval Walls. Once a city has built Renaissance Walls or has researched the Steel technology which gives all cities Urban Defenses, which are basically special walls, you will have to use artillery or bombers to break their defenses. Hovering over the city center will tell you the level of walls. If it doesn't say what level of walls the city has and the city has a second health bar, they have Urban Defenses.

You can also use ranged naval units to take down the improved walls. Actually, I think any unit can do damage to walls, but as stated they are ineffective compared to the likes of bombers, artillery or battleships/missle cruisers (if on the coast). And, let's not forget those Death Robots if you can get one of those. ;-)

Do I have to have a tower on each tile or is one tower with all other units surrounding the city enough?

You just need a tower or ram to be adjacent to the enemy City Center for the effect to work. The attacking unit does not even need to be on the same tile to take advantage of it.

I got it working. For some reason when I was fighting a city state it didn't work at all. Maybe because I moved units into the place and later on the towers. But when I combined them with a unit before the siege it worked
