Your real name ... you mean Civ uses Gallow or something else?
KnightofSpades Oct 29, 2016 @ 3:40pm
Uses the name you registered with Windows... Why? Idk but it's damn stupid..

You can change your name in Steam. Just click on your name on the right side of the second line of the UI ( it starts with Store, Library,Community, YOUR NAME) and then edit your profile to a online name you wish to use with Steam and all of your games and discussions. Civ 6 always seemed to be referring to me by the name of the leader of the civilization I was playing.

I am referring to the multiplayer username seen in lobby's and multiplayer chat. Which is not associated with leader names, steam's profile name, nor nickname.

It pulls your computers name for multiplayer. Does Windows 10 default set your comps name to your microsoft account? Pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dumb if so. I Don't know how to change the multiplayer name, but change your computers name even if you figure out how to change it in multiplayer.

Really, it does that?
Whos bright idea was that.. Seems like one of those things you should be pre warned over. Then prompted with an option to change it.

Why its like that over Steam username in the first place is still odd though.

any fix for this yet? my partner is using my second computer, so we are both playing with the same name since they are both my computers!\

run netplwiz
click properties on your username and change
reboot

after you hit apply, you may also want to uncheck the box so you don't have to log into windows every time you turn it on. It'll save your username and password and use it for you each time.

NOTE: ALL EXISTING MULTIPLAYER GAME SAVES WILL BE TOAST as it's looking for someone with your previous name to fill that slot. It'll put you into a slot that was previously handled by the AI

This breaks your windows user, DON'T do this.
Source: Tried it, you'll end up with no administrator users and a hell of a lot of trouble getting a new one to work.

Windows 10 wants you. Lots of games pull your computer name and display it as your user name. If you register your computer with Microsoft, the name you register under with Microsoft becomes your computer name. Once you register your computer with Microsoft, you cannot get around it or create a new user that isn't registered with Microsoft. You only have one opportunity to avoid this, when you first install/setup Win10 on your computer. You need to ignore the default option and find that "Local" box in the lower left hand corner of the setup window and click that. Then you bypass Microsoft's intrusion into your gaming life and can set up your computer as you did before Windows 10 and name it anything you want.

If you've already followed Win10's default set up, and named your computer "Charles Cook" the only way to fix it is to reset Win10 and start over. (Do this: On the log in screen, click the Power icon in the bottom right and then Hold DOWN the shift key and click restart. Keep the shift key down until the troubleshooting screen appears and go from there. Google: How to reset Windows 10 from the Log In screen.)

If you use your gaming rig for something other than gaming then you may want the benefits that Microsoft offers if you submit to them. But if your gaming rig is only for gaming, then resetting Win10 will solve this problem.

And, as you reset your computer, you are really, really glad that you put Steam, along with all your other games, on that external hard drive. Reload your browser and virus protection and you are good to go.

I'm not sure if it work but try to copy the file in Sid Meiers Civilization VI > Base > Assets > Configuration > Data > Players.xml. Edit it with notepad++ and keep a copy of the original file if it not working. Then past your edited file in the same Data file then try. I will check if it work too.

:winter2019happybulb: A little late to the party, but just in case others with the same issue find this - I was looking for this myself, and I found where it was!

Open
UserOptions.txt
in
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization VI

and search for whatever the game is calling you now (in multiplayer, at least)
It's the setting called
LANPlayerName
in the
[Multiplayer]
-section (Line 116 here, but this might differ)
