The official Mac thread.
Aspyr is honored to announce the release of Civilization VI Mac!!! This is a thread for all the Apple heads out there. We will do our best to keep the thread updated with the latest information, as well as ongoing Mac details of this amazing game.

First and foremost, lets go over the officially supported system requirements:

Operating System: OSX 10.11 (El Capitan) and MacOS 10.12 (Sierra)
CPU Processor: Intel Core i5 (4 cores)
CPU Speed: 2.7 GHz
Memory: 6 GB
Hard Disk Space: 15 GB
Video Card (ATI): Radeon 6970M
Video Card (NVIDIA): GeForce 775M
Video Card (Intel): Iris Pro
Video Memory (VRam): 1 GB
Peripherals: Macintosh mouse and keyboard, Steam Controller (optional)

Its important to note that our minimum system requirements are based on a comprehensive knowledge of performance throughout the game. In short, we believe the above requirements are enough horsepower to fuel late game and large maps at acceptable frame rates, and we've set the default settings on every Mac for optimal performance within the game itself. Know that turning up any of the default settings will likely result in decreased performance.

We want to give a special shoutout to the fine folks at Firaxis and especially our friends at 2K QA. Without a great deal of cooperation and support from these partners, the Mac release near the Windows release is impossible.

I started having problems probably when I updated my mini M1 8GB to Sonoma 14.5, though I'm not completely sure.
I couldn't finish one single Civ game for the last 2 weeks or so.
First I thought it was the massive amount of MODs, which I brought back to half (still many :)
But the problem persisted.
Then I thought of a corrupt file and started several new games, but the problem is still there. Today I wrote to Aspyr and sent them a pair of screenshots.
I'm thinking about bringing back Mac to previous Sonoma version, even though that might be completely unrelated.
Oh, when each game crashes - always at the same time, normally during barbarian turn - when reopening I normally get back the message ' A connection to Civilization VI could not be established. Civilization VI features might not be accessible. Then the game opens.
But it will crash again sooner or later

iMac M1 - Sonoma 14.5 - 8GB RAM: Game worked fine for the longest time. Now it fails to load when creating a new game, even with all Mods turned off. Opening a prior game seems to work fine. There was a Steam update when I powered up this morning, and wondering if maybe that broke something. It just says game failed to load, try uninstalling any mods and try again.

Weird: same Mac and configuration but different problems.
Today I wrote to Aspyr, let's see what they come out with.

Mine is different: regardless of whether I create a new game or load an existing one, sooner or later the game crashes. Normally between turn 25 and 75, sometimes earlier sometimes later. When I reload that saved game, the game always crashes at the exact same point (usually during the barbarian phase).
I can't say if the case of a loaded game affects the game.
I'm in contact with Aspyr and already sent them some screenshots and the report generated, even my Mac Mini .spx file with details on the system in use.
Let's see what they reply

So far I've spent over 12 hours installing and uninstalling this game trying to get it to work. Every time I get to "verifying Civilization VI" everything crashes or succumbs to the wheel of death. Any advice? Honestly I regret bothering at this stage.

I've got the same, after verifying a window pops up saying the files are corrupted, everything crash after it.

“Civilization VI” is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Bin."
I bought the game a few days ago and never war able to open it.

I downloaded, installed, uninstalled, redownloaded, reinstalled multiple times. This is the only outcome.

Macbook Air 2020 M1, 16 GB, 14.5 Sonoma

Now that one is fixable:
After receiving the "damaged" error message,
- Open the Mac System Settings.
- Select "Privacy and Security".
- Select "Security Settings"
- In the Security Settings, you should see a prompt saying "Civilization VI was blocked..." Click the "Open Anyway" button under this text.
- Enter your system password if prompted.

Its a known bug.

Any chance you could get the monthly challenge fixed to work on Mac? It's pretty lame that it's been months and months and there's no update.
emilydolloff Jun 17, 2024 @ 7:52pm
I am having trouble launching the game. I am on a brand new Mac, but when I get the notice of a configuration error or error unknown when I try to launch the game. I tried the suggestions above, including going into the "Privacy and Security" and "Security Settings" options. I clicked "Open Anyway", but still had an error. Now I do not have the notice that Civ VI was blocked. Any other suggestions? Thank you!

I have macbook air m2. Any ideas how to fix desync issue on mac? It's so frustrating when you buy a game and multiplayer is broken because I'm constantly desyncing.

After updating my OS to Catalina, Civ 6 has to do a long Verifying before opening.

Is that what you 2 are seeing?:

It hasn't completed yet.. I'm just hoping its not the same.

Wow, Catalina takes over half an hour to verify Civ 6 on its first launch. The OS, not Steam. But once it finished it worked.

I had to reinstall a couple times. And I reinstalled Catalina once, from Recovery. And resinstalled Steam once. And also downloaded from a different Steam Download Region the time it worked.

Maybe one of those things will help these people?:
